Posts: 416 Location: Madtown, WI | So another on this board recommended that I forgo a reel repairman and try to figure it out myself. So last night I accepted the challenge, I ripped one apart for the sole purpose of figuring out how everything works and am convinced I can solve the majority of the problems (just to let you know, I have 7 non/semi functioning Abu's that I've collected over the past 10 years). The only problem I'm questioning myself on is the anti reverse. If I set the hook into a fish (usually on logs) my anti reverse will crap out and the handle will spin back and nail my nuckle (quite painful). Is this likely the pinion gear, drive gear (or both), or something else altogether that needs to be replaced? I don't see any physical problem with any parts, but I don't think I quite have an trained eye for that. Before you question how hard I am on my equipment, it should be mentioned that NONE of my Abu's were purchased new, all came secondhand or were refurbished. I have learned my lesson by the way, and am trying to salvage what I got. Thanks a lot guys!

Posts: 358 Location: London, England | If they're instant anti reverse models it's usually too much oil or grease in the AR bearing, which is pressed into the sideplate on the gearbox side. If you de-grease it and either leave it dry or just a drop of very light oil it should sort the problem. If when you examine the AR bearing some of the little leaf springs are missing the bearing's shot and you need a new sideplate. On older non IAR models there's an AR dog which is attached to the main drive pinion with a couple of little brass leaves holding it onto the square notched cog. This needs to locat onto the little post for the ar dog for it all to function correctly. If the ar dog is missing, or one or both of the leaves are broken it will not work properly.

Posts: 313 Location: On your favorite spot | As best as I can tell, the instant anti reverse mechanism is not something that can be serviced by yourself - I had a similar problem. It's either working or it needs to be replaced. Good thing is that it's a simple part that you could probably replace if you can order a new one. My reel was fairly new so I just exchanged the whole thing.

Posts: 73 Location: Indiana | I just did the same thing with my Abu's and feel pretty confident myself. I had never broken down a reel before and these seem pretty user friendly. The anchor thread helped a ton and I can see there are some parts that I need to replace....which should be fairly simple. I did a little bit of searching and came across a pretty user friendly site to get replacement reel parts. www.southwesternparts.com. You can search by the make and model of the reel. It will then show a schematic with the part numbers and allow you to add the part numbers right there while looking at the schematics. The prices are a bit better than other places and they can overnight them if you need them in a hurry. Pretty cool stuff...

Posts: 416 Location: Madtown, WI | muskie! nut, I've heard of a lot of people just sending their reels back to Abu and later finding themselves with a brand new abu but.... all the reels I have, as mentioned, are second hand or refurbished therefore all are rather old (probably mid 90s) so, unless others know better, I doubt they would repair/replace them free of charge with no proof of purchase or any registration proof (i'm not sure if Abu does that). Then I would have to pay shipping and repair fees which costs some minimum amount per reel. So far, $20 is going to hopefully fix 5 reels for me.... 4 for sure. However, if this were an option that I would wish to explore could anyone give odds on the chances that I would receive a new reel at my door for no cost? If the odds were good, I might ship off one of the casualties. Thanks again for all the great advice! Edited by stdevos 4/10/2007 7:06 PM
