Posts: 1316 Location: Madison, WI | Was having problems with 3 of my reels, a record and 2 6500C3's. Talked to one of the techs about 2 weeks ago, he told me to send all 3 in. Just recieved in the mail today 3 BRAND NEW reels!! Very impressed with the turn around time between receiving and shipping. Very happy that I made to choice to buy abu garcia. Gives me warm fuzzy's!

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | I sent them two 5500s two years ago and they told me I would have to pay alsmost what I paid for them new for the repairs!! I'm not impressed at all by ABU. Buyer beware. RM Editor's note: This one is VERY close to a bash. It's the last statement that causes the grief, and the fact these reels might have been out of production and no longer under warranty doesn't help; obviously something was different in the experience. OutdoorsFIRST doesn't have the time or inclination to check the details of every post for accuracy. THINK before you post, remembering we do NOT allow product or person bashing.

Posts: 4266 | Just the opposite for me. I've sent reel3 in for cleaning and servicing that were 3 years old. They serviced them, replaced parts, cleaned and lubed all on the house. The slip said "Warranty work." I didn't know that gears, drag washers and other parts were covered. I've done that several times in the last 6 years, and have never been charged a penny. I'll use ABUs until I croak. Beav

I'm not impressed at all by ABU. Buyer beware. RM It seems that they only charge for repairs if the reel is no longer made. I have had several repaired/replaced over the years and the only one I was charge for parts was a old 6001C and turn around time is normally a week. Even had a 7001HS that was missing a knob and they did that reel under warranty. Great service, best I've had to deal with in fishing.

Posts: 317 | my point of contention with ABU is that 2 brand new $140 Records should have lasted more than 4 months before exploding.

Posts: 10 | ABU has the best customer service I have ever seen. I have had alot of great service on reel repairs. They have to otherwise they would not exist anymore. Granted All reels break down doing what what we do with them. But the abu's have hand gernaded quicker than most in my experiance. My record made it the whole season this year my fingers are crossed!

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | I just sent in two Records for blown anti reverse and one d5600 for multiple problems and was shocked to see three new reels at my house today. Wow they even returned my old spools full of line. Cant beat service like that. Abu all the way. Kingfisher

Had 3 millionaires go bad this year after 1 year of normal use.. 4-5 weeks later I got a letter for a bill of $40-$50 per reel, if not paid, then the reels would be disposed of after a month or so.. Looks like I will be switching back to Garcia, customer service means way too much... Edited by jclymer 1/5/2007 6:11 PM

Posts: 780 | I'll take this discussion in a different direction. Big ups to Abu in listening to their customers in re-designing their reels this year. I personally feel the company made some dramatic improvements on many of their round baitcasters. For example, the new 7000ihsn. What a big difference over the old model. As far as commenting on their service, I can't. I use 7000's for the majority of my fishing. With the exception of my 7000 gold HSN spool freeze up, I've never had to send a 7000 in for repairs. I've just had the drag washers replaced on my original red 7000 that I bought back in the mid 80's. Over twenty years of musky fishing duty with no problems. A good end of the season cleaning, fresh oil and lube, and back into service they go! What kinds of problems are you guys experiencing with your reels? Kdawg

Posts: 317 | The Record anti reverse bearings are plastic. One good hookset or snag and they explode.

Posts: 1060 Location: Medford, WI | Would anyone be willing to PM me the address which they sent their reels to? I have 3 reels that definitely need some work and would like to know where to send them to ABU. Thanks guys, Jake

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | I talked with a tech about the anti reverse gear being plastic and he said they were passing that on to the company. They should be able to make that gear out of Brass or stainless steel. as a warranty replacment gear. I really liked my Records this season but was a little let down by the durability issue as well. They stand behind the reels though and that means they will fix the problem. With a service department like that Abu Garcia gets my vote. Kingfisher

Posts: 1060 Location: Medford, WI | Thanks guest. Also, do you guys send them in with a note saying what is wrong with them, noting exactly everything, or just send them in and they figure out what's wrong/broken and fix it? Thanks, Jake

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | I send a note. You have to send a name & address to tell them where to send it back anyways, so why not give them an idea of what is the matter. Also wise to give them your daytime phne, if they have any question(s) for you. If you are unsure, go ahead and contact them and let them tell you what to do. BTW - that was me that posted the web site address, I cleaned my cookies out and forgot to log back in when I posted. Edited by muskie! nut 1/7/2007 2:48 PM

Posts: 1270 | Would someone tell me one reel company that uses a metal anti-reverse bearing?
MuskyStalker![]() |

Posts: 317 | The Abu 7000 uses metal. After I blew the Record setting a hook on a rock during the PMTT at Vermilion, I put on my trusty 7000 and said "no way this will happen with this reel" 5 minutes later I set the hook on a rock and blow it up. I take both the the Rollies tent and the reel tech took them apart and diagnosed blown anti-reverse on both. He went on to say that the Records needed to be replaced, that you can't fix them, then he got a $2 part and fixed the 7000, which uses a metal anti-reverse dog and gear.

Posts: 1270 | Yes the 7000 uses a metal anti-reverse dog but it is not an instant anti reverse. To the best of my knowledge all manufactures use a plastic housing for there instant anti reverse. There are metal rollers contained in a plastic "cup" that forms the intsant anti reverse. The problem with the Record anti reverse was not the fact that it was contained in a plastic houseing but that they used grease instead of oil in the first ones that came out.

I work in the oil fields of the Gulf of Mexico and for about 2 months one time I was reduced to using a 6500c3 when my penn 330gti quit on me. This reel belonged to a coworker who used it to catch bait fish. By the end of my trip I had bought the reel from him. I was catching 20+ pound blackfin tuna with no problems. I just recently gave that reel to my father to live bait fish for bass in Mexico. Thaere is not a problem in the world with these reels and in my opinion are the toughest reels out there anywhere near their price range

Posts: 3910 | I don't know anything about "Records". Only 4 months, huh? Thta's as bad as those crappy Quantums. I'm guessing you can replace the weak part with an upgrade from Hatterass Outfitters. Give Tres a call. In my opinion, Garcia way overlubes their reels. Any new Abu reel should be broken down, cleaned and then relubed. Throw some Smooothie drag washers in there while you have the chance, they are terrific.

Posts: 227 Location: New Brighton, MN | I also can say that Abu has incredible service. I sent in a flawed reel, and received a new Record ($50 upgrade) 3 days later with no extra charge. I was absolutely shocked.

As for being overlubed...that goes for every brand. A lot of reels come with grease in areas oil should be (so it doesn't spill out in the box) If you break it down and relube it, performance will be a lot better.

Are there any good sources for instruction on how to break down reels and lube them? Most manuals recomend hiring "professionals" to service the reels.

Someone made the comment after my last post that the reels I sent in might have been "out of production".....not at all, two 5501s that you can buy anywhere and were only 2 or 3 yrs old when I sent them in. This was their 3rd repair job by the way. I will add tho that I haven't had any problems with my other two 6501's in quite some time........maybe the two 5501's were just "lemons".
