Well.... IF Long Tale Tackle had a Pro Staff.... this little guy would be on top of the list. Loaded with a handful of "custom" spinnerbaits tied by MOM, dad took him to the lake today.... in the rain I might add... to see if they worked. Yup... they worked just fine. As usual, the pike ate 'em up... and after some strong urging to hit the "spot where we saw the gar last time"... Dad took him there. Despite some coaching ahead of time from dad that gar are very difficult to catch due to their bony mouths and bristle teeth so he MAY not catch one... he hooked and landed one all by himself.

Perhaps Mike Roberts' potential state record Dogfish inspired my little guy to hop on the "trash fish" bandwagon??? Regardless... he and dad had an absolute ball. No muskies to speak of... but a fun morning none-the-less.

There you go, now you have the idea for the latest skirts on the longtale's. A nice rope skirt in various colors to tangle the gar's teeth . Always great to have a partner.

Gotta love kid pics with fish! my favorite pic is not of Lori or I with our PB's, it is with the grandbaby with her biggest fish (sheephead). You got a fishing buddy for life.

OK... so maybe I should get him some kid-sized gloves? He'd rather not wear them, but DAD makes him on bigger fish "with teeth".... just to be safe.

Does Musky Armour make a youth size???

Yah... now dad is just showing off his "little fisherman", but here he is with a musky last fall when he was only 4 years old.

I think Ethan will grow into those gloves just fine, Jason. In fact, it won't be too long, and he'll be looking for a pair that will fit your old hands!

Keep them kid pics coming! They are the best.

Nobody had turned Mr. Long in for Child Abuse yet? No child, I mean no child should have to wear a Packers hat at such a young age. The boy will be scarred for life! Cool pics though, looks like the boy is having a blast!

Jason,
If you plan on making tomorrow night's meeting, could you please bring your little guy's rod? I want to see what works for the little ones, because I gotta get the granddaughter on a fish this year!

Very cool pics Jason!

Can I ask how old was your son when he started casting baits in the boat other than bobber fishing?

My son just turned two. We have been bobber fishing off the end of the dock a couple of times this yr already. (he fell off the end of the doc on mem day wk end into 58 degree water) He gets very excited with each bluegill that we catch and loves to watch fishing shows with me.

I'm wondering how long it will be until I can safely take him into the boat for bobber fishing & then start casting for bass, pike, muskies.

thanks,

Grass

Grass,
Ethan has been bobber fishing since he was 2 and started casting rapalas and beetle spins the next year. Last year he used a Zebco 33 combo to cast larger bass style lures in preparation for true musky fishing.

This year I got him a cheap baitcaster combo to help him throw larger lures. The small, low profile baitcast fits in his small hands quite well. I spooled it with 20# Spiderwire and turned up the "cast control". To my surprise, he can cast that just as good as his Zebco 33!!!! He even knows how to "thumb the line" to prevent a backlash. Kids never cease to amaze me. Sure, he gets a tangle now and then... but who doesn't!

One key ingredient, however, is desire. My older son, Preston, who is 7 has less interest in fishing and is still only into "bobber fishing". So, you can't force a kid to fish muskies. Maybe someday my older son will take greater interest in the sport... but it will be HIS choice, not mine.
