Hi!
In august a group of swedes, including myself, are going to fish for musky at Youngs wilderness camp at Lake of the woods. I havent been fishing for musky before, so naturaly I have some questions about baits and tactics.

1. What "must-baits" shall I buy?
2. What kind of tactic?

We´re going to stay from 6 august to 12 august.

Sinc

Roger

That's a great time to be fishing up there, try bucktails and jerk baits. Mepps Maribou in black and gold worked good for me. m

You could probably go there with a spinnerbait like an M&G or candy spin (they love candy on LOTW), a topraider, and a Jack Pot/Weagle and do just fine.

August sounds like rock muskies to me. That said, here's what would be my starting rotation:

10" unweighted Suick (orange or chartreuse/black dots)
Top Raider
Spinnerbait
some kind of 10" marabou bucktail (Comboo for me)
Shallow Invader
HAWG WOBBLER!!!!

These baits will allow you to bang rocks, probe around, cover water, high hooking baits, and baits that can be worked slow in a prime area. These 6 will allow you to venture into weeds without really having to change your approach. The first day you are there I would try and mix up spot types; that is, fish rocks, rock/weed combinations, weedbeds, slop (shallow nasty weeds), reefs, island complexes, etc. Point is to mix it up and try to find where the fish would appear to be using what structure the most. Put in a lot of hours the first day to try and establish a pattern.

Good luck! You'll be coming a long way so I hope all goes well!

Hot Orange Reef Hawg, Black Vibrax, and/or a Topraider...at least when I was there the end of July of 2000 those were the 3 baits we saw/caught all of our fish on...

We fish out of that camp in early/mid July. Nice place, good people. Though I bring 500 lures, I end up using a few by the end.

My advice is...keep it simple. Leave the $50 customs at home. The other guys have some good suggestions. Bucktails & spinnerbaits in black/gold, black/orange. You might have bloom issues in August, so bring black/chartreuse.

Topraiders & a few side-to-sides (Dancin' Raider, etc.).

Crane 208s & 207s, Shallow Raiders, Shallow Invaders, Super Shads.

Throw in a few jerks (Suicks & especially 8" Reef Hawgs) to mix it up and you should be set.

By August most big fish will be out of the shallow bays (Stevens, Stoney Portage) and more on the main lake rock areas. BUT it is always worth exploring the bays.

LOTW in August gives me the shakes!! Look for fish to be relating to weeds in the early part of the month , moving to rocks as the month moves into Sept.
Bucktails and spinnerbaits should be hot at this time. Look for a topwater bite late in the afternoon, but my favorite thing to do at this time is jerkbaits. Personal favorite is a 9" Sledge. Plastic bait , very quick on the rise so you can work it REAL shallow. Good lure for rocks and weeds. Fish should be fairly shallow. Will probably be a algae bloom at this time so look for water where the bloom has been blown clear of structure This should get you started on one hell of a good fishing trip, let us know how is does.
Hope you hang a hog
Good luck,

Thanks to you all! Very, very informative and detailed information. Exactly the kind of info which is nearly impossible to find in Sweden (or Europe). I will tell you the results in late august.

If any of you have plans to fish for big northerns in the Baltic sea, dont hesitate to send me a message.

That's the time of year when the fish are suicidal.
