Muskie-kid, experiment, experiment, experiment, experiment, and lastly, experiment. Have fun. use water based paints, as long as you use a clear coat. If you mess up with waterbased paints, you can run them under the sink and erase it. I, as well as some other guys here use Createx, as well as Autoair. I use both, and mix colors to get the desired effect/ color. Again, have fun!

If you dont have an airbrush, you can still make some nice looking baits using rattle cans. Find some mesh or anything with a scale like pattern and go wild. Also, you could expiriment with tape to make bars like those in a bumblebee pattern. I like your idea of using nail heads for dots. I hope this helps

I MAKE MY OWN CRANK AND JERK BAITS OUT OF BASSWOOD I GET MY WOOD AT BALSA INTERNATIONAL THEY HAVE A WEB SIGHT . I USE ACRYLIC PAINT IT DOES NOT HAVE THE FUMES LIKE OTHER PAINTS .I HAND PAINT ALL MY BAITS I ALSO USE CRYSTAL SHEEN ITS A TWO PART POLYMER 100 PERCENT WATER PROOF AND RESISTANT TO HEAT .I EPOXY ALL MY LURE COMPONENTS IN PLACE TO KEEP MY BAITS WATER PROOF AS POSSIBLE ,BUT THERE MADE OUT OF WOOD THEY WILL GET BEAT UP IN TIME . BY THE WAY I GET MY PAINT FROM VAN DYKES IT A TAXIDERMY SUPPLY CO

You can get a cool effect with enamel paint dripped on water and dipping your lure through it it makes a cool swirl effect
