Posts: 176 Location: Tomahawk, WI | I believe you have a 690 Ranger with a 175 Mariner correct? What prop are you running?. I have the same boat motor setup, and im not happy with the hole shot, or slight porpoising at slower speeds, im running a SS 4 blade prop (forgot the name maybe a Trophy, will look tonight). I like the top end 58GPS on smooth water by myself, would not mind losing a few MPH for better hole shot. Thinking of a 3 blade 21P Tempest, but dont want to purchase one without knowing if thats the best prop for my setup.

| Hey I'll have to go looksy....it's in the garage...I know it is a 3 blade, and I think it's a tempest...the fastest I've had it going is 57 on gps and that was w/ 2 people...usually I get 53-54 with 2 people and 1/2 tank of gas...plenty fast...it comes out of the hole fine with the prop I have...oh, it's a 175 efi Merc...basically the same as Mariner though back then right? I'll look today/tomorrow and post what it is... | |||

| one thing i did notice is if i keep the tank at 1/2 tank or more it seems to ride a lot better and actually runs higher top speeds...are you keeping your tank fairly full? also, make sure the passengers are seated at least as far forward as you are .... | |||

Posts: 176 Location: Tomahawk, WI | Yes, same as the Merc, i noticed a better ride with half tank of gas, i noticed last summer on LOTW with full tank (43 gal.) and i would say 1.5 to 2 foot waves my boat would porpouse and speer waves, i would have to keep playing with the trim, this happened at slower speeds (about 25-35 mph) not so much if i cranked it up to 45-50, but i dont want to run wide open because you can watch the gas gauge go down and gas is very expensive in Canada. as the week went on it got better because of less fuel in the tank. I like to keep it at 4000 RPM or slightly under for the best fuel milage. The prop probably wont help with this, it is probably the hull. Thanks for the info, its nice we have the same boats and will be able to discuss different issues.

| as far as fuel mileage..my tach is not working for some reason so I just go by "feel" and sound of the motor...but I would say you are right that about 3500-4000 rpm is about right..for me that seems to be about 32 mph... but they sure suck gas regardless don't they! not bad on oil though ey?!? | |||

| I'd imagine it will come out of the hole a bit better and just take a few mph off the top..should work fine... | |||

Posts: 176 Location: Tomahawk, WI | thats what im hoping for. As far as "sucking gas" they sure do. Burned up 43 gallons on LOTW last year, may not sound like much, but i was only there for 2-1/2 days. I tried taking it easy, but you know when you got all that hp you kinda like to use it. LOL

| Guys, I just went and looked, I still have the prop I ran on my 690, when I traded it I gave them the spare and kept the good one. It is a 21 pitch Tempest plus. Awesome hole shot on my old 690, my top end was low mid 50's. I too always had the best performance with around 1/2-3/4 tank of fuel with it. With a full 43 gallon tank in big waves, LOTW, Mille Lacs, even my home lake, it took quite a bit of messing with trim/tilt/rpm ranges to get it to ride decent and even then it wasn't the best. Still IMHO one of the best rigs ever made by Ranger or any other manufacturer. Love my new 618 VS, but the 690 will always have a place in my heart. They fished awesome, run decent, and are a good looking rig with pleanty of room. Enjoy your new prop, it will work just fine. Mark Hintz Musky Adventures Eau Claire, WI | |||
