Subject: Abu Reels

I have about 7 Abu reels from over the last two years that are blown out. Where do you guys send these to at Abu? Does anyone have an address?

What is the process? Turnaround?

Thanks.

You can send them to Spirit Lake IA, but I suspect that they aren't relly "blown out" at all. Probably in need of a good teardown/cleaning. My suggestion would be get out the reel shematic, the instructions Chuck Nelson posted a while back in the tackle and equipment thread, and a few tools and fix them all yourself. Probably save yourself a decent chunck of change that way.

There has been a changing of the guard at Abu since Berkley took over. Seems some fellas of the club would send there reels in for repairs regularly and get them back in no time. For very little if no charge at all. Now they are getting big repair bills. And wont get the reels back until it is paid. When asked about this they responded that once a reel is out of its' warranty period then you will be charger. One member said the reels he had sent in in the past were 5 years old. She responded by saying ,"Times are changing i guess." So you have been forewarned.......

Berkely bought ABU over 12 years ago and there was no real change in warranty service, what has changed is that everybody hears things on the internet!

Abu's have a 1 year warranty and for the most part they do not care about the 1 year or not. If the reel is well taken care of and it develops a problem it will ussually be taken care of under warranty. If the reel is only 18 months old, or even 6 months old, and is beat to hell and not taken care of, and there is a tone of gunk in the level wind and the worm gear goes out that is not a warranty issue and you could very well be charged.

Most trucks come with a 3 year warranty but don't change the oil or do any other prevenative maintanance and take it back to your dealer in 1 year with a siezed engine and see what they tell you about warranty!

I always laugh when I hear a guy say he sent a 6 month old reel in perfect shape to have a minor fix done and they charged him $30 to have it fixed. I would love to see that reel in "perfect shape" that he sent in. I would bet that it has been abused to know end.

I called first- my reels were back in a week. A little pricey I thought but at least they were repaired/replaced properly.

This was tricky one.
My friend reel "sides" was bad condition after testin paint cleaning with hydrochloric acid. Around all screwholes was "corroded", around all scratches was "corroded".

I decide to fix "corroded" part with chemical metal. Only worry was "how can i grind those "sides" smooth.

I run out my skills and send those sides to my friend and he finish it.

I try to put pictures in right order.

Awesome pictures here. That paintjob is sweet. I also have never seen those old spinning reels. Interesting that the new cardinal 3 reel uses the same kind of drag adjustment.
