Posts: 202 Location: Rhinelander | Alright, I have found 3 locators in the $600 range but don't know which one to get. They are the Lowrance LMS 334, Lowrance LCX 20, or Eagle Fish Elite 642. My questions regard the technical aspects of locators. The LCX 20 has a 6" screen compared to the 5" on the other two. However its pixel count is less than the other two, but the peak watts are more. What should I buy, a locator with more power or more pixels?? The LMS has less pixels but more power than the Eagle. Thanks for any guidance Bart

Posts: 720 | Hi Ho, I'm sorry I can't help you with the three units your looking at. I can say that I would give up on the units power vs. number of pixels. Last summer purchased a Humminbird 777c2 and I love it. It has the best color screen for a 550.00 unit out there in my opinion. Check it out. good luck Dave

Posts: 512 Location: Appleton | I'm guessing the LCX - 20 is a 2006 model. I've been looking at new locators and I'm leaning towards the LMS 522 igps. It is NMEA 2000 compatible and the LMS 334 isn't and it's only $650. Many other features are the same as the 334 but some upgrades on the 522. I'm not familar with the Eagle 642. I someday want to link my two locators so the 2000 compatibility is important to me. Just my opinion.

Posts: 202 Location: Rhinelander | According to the Cabela's catalog from 2006, all LMS 300 series locators are NMEA compatible. The 522 is the new model number for the 334. I think the LCX 20 is a 2005 model because it is not in the 06 catalogs. Do more pixels on a 5" screen outweigh less on a 6" screen???

Posts: 3920 | I don't have an informed opinion, all I've owned are Hummers, and never anything above medium quality. But here are some thoughts to consider..... Can you take the finder off the boat and use it as a portable during the winter? You can buy a portable base for many Hummers, but, not a transducer holder (like what you get on a Vexilar). I had to make a transducer holder out of a tip-up. How's the zoom? With the contrast turned up, I can very easily see a tiny teardrop jig with a single spike in 40' of water. And I can see how the fish respond. These are likely standard, but just in case....speed and water temp are very helpful. Gotta have speed to troll. On some units (like mine), speed and temp are extra add-ons. The bigger the screen, the better; you gotta be able to see it as you move about the boat. Guess that's it. Have fun shopping!

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | i'll agree on the power. i bought a 26c and a 334c ... the power difference and the corresponding definition in the display using the chip was so good on the larger unit that i just don't like the other one and will be changing it out to another higher power unit this year. i mounted the 334c on my 4-wheeler for ice fishing so got away without wasting money in the long run, but make sure that whatever you get that you know how it's going to display relative to your expectations before you buy it!
