Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | After seeing Snax's painting of the musky. It inspired me to try to make a little musky lure. 8" floater. Side note: I tried my first carved head. Snax's I don't know how you do all of those lures like that. It takes a ton of time. I was getting depressed with each coat of epoxy as it filled all the detail in with each coat! Here are a couple of pics Take care John Attachments ---------------- DSC02897muskyheadprepox.jpg (23KB - 116 downloads) DSC02908muskyhead.jpg (26KB - 122 downloads) DSC02915sideviewmusky.jpg (25KB - 119 downloads)

That's why Snax paints the gills and other details on now instead of carving it. To much work just to fill it all in with epoxy.

Posts: 46 Location: Milwaukee,Wi | Tigger,Very nice paint work, awsome fades! Question. When you say floater, does this mean it's a surface glide? As far as epoxy filling your carving detail, I ran into the same situation with my first handcarve, The foil Gill. But if you paint those area's before epoxy, the detail remain's. Beautiful lure! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Thanks guys, This was the first lure that I have done with no foil involved, just paint. It changes the game. It is alot harder for me. I will need to upgrade my airbrush for sure. My thing is the foil. Just wanted to try something different. The carving was fun to try but I cant see doing it for me. I have a little sears craftsman dremmel that I got when my father-inlaw passed away. I kept covering the vent holes for the motor and it was getting hot to hold. It was fun to try. I have better appreciation for the carvers for sure now! It has some weight in it but it floats. I guess it would be called a jerkbait. The nose does let it dive down and float up. I have a nice little shallow weed bed flat I want to use it at. Probably catch a bunch of bass! LOL Row, That bluegill was incredible! Can't wait for you next one! You raised the bar! Posts: 680 Location: Muskoka Ontario,Canada | Hey buddy, nice to see you trying something different. Looks great of course! It is indeed a lot more work doing all the carved details. I had stopped doing it for a spell but ultimately decided that it was my niche and I do it again. I also agree with Rowhunter in that if you use your paint to emphasize the carved details, the look will remain after epoxying. Really really nicely done John, you should be proud. By the way, I love the taxidermy eyes. They really add a lifelike touch. Edited by Musky Snax 3/1/2007 11:47 AM

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Thanks everybody, The eyes are like snax said, Taxidermy eyes. I buy the blank eyes and paint them myself. I am starting to see what to do or not do with those. I found a simple outline and a couple of whifs with two colors is the best way to do them. Oh ya, Tape them down! You have to spend an hr to find them again under the bench!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It may be overkill with them. Still fun to do! LOL John
