I'm interested in a handheld GPS for lake use. Any advise on what to look for? I'd like to keep it under $200, or isn't it worth going that cheap?

under 200? i dont think you are going to be happy with any unit that cheap. Go with the Garmin GPSMAP60 for a hand held. Or you can upgrade to color. I think Cabela's has the black and white for 275-300 right now.

$250 at gander mountain you can get a Lowrance Ifinder h20c. A little more than you wanted to spend but well worth it. Color, decent sized screen, waterproof, and it takes the lake chips. Also comes with a cigarette plug, I'm sure its not recommended, but I'm gonna take the plug and just cut it and run it to my my battery in the boat. Its still 12 volts, so I don't think I'll have any problems.

The Monochrome h20 is about 170 I think. Same features without the color.

For $300 you can get the venture cx bundle pack that includes a lake chip, carrying case and 12 volt adapter. The chip is normally $80-100 by itself. Its a pretty good deal IMO.

Thanks guys for the info. Lake chips were mentioned. What is on a lake chip? Does each chip cover an area of lakes? If I go to a different area do I need a different chip? Are all chips compatible to any gps unit? As you can see I don't know much about this, that's why I'm asking. Thanks

Different GPS units may require a different lake chip. Garmins use micro-sd whereas Lowrance GPS's use a regular SD card. The chips are of different regions and can cover anywhere from 1 to 15 states depending on brand.
