Posts: 217 Location: ladysmith, wi | This sept northern states power will be lowering the flowage 30ft, the last time they did this was in 1985 and from that point on u couldnt catch a bullhead to save your life, but before the 85 lowering u could catch all u wanted, this past yr was the best musky fishing i have exsperienced on dairyland with a couple 50's and alot of mid to upper 40's, what effects do u guys feel the lowering will have on the muskies?

30 feet. That number doesn't sound right. How would that effect the other flowages downstream? Please post the article on this. I would be very interested to read about it. Lowering it 30 feet coudn't be good.

Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | What he says is true. The lowering is scheduled for about a two-week period of time in order to do work on the dam. At that time the Rusk Co. Wildlife Association has some big plans for improving lake structure and fish habitat and is working with the DNR on this. There will be a ton of work going on in short period of time. Our local M.I. chapter will be involved in helping with this. If you want more details, contact Jerry Carrow from R.C.W.A. What effect? In the long run it should be better, but for this season it may not be so good, as obviously the drawdown will take some time, then the work phase and then filling it back up. Hopefully we'll get some decent rain to help the situation. Currently most area waters are much lower than normal, we have had virtually no snow all year and even up to Hayward and Ashland there is only a small trace of snow. Dairyland has been a decent fishery, and should continue to be in the future, you'll just have to be patient this season.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | While it is unfortunate that these drawdowns need to occur, they were built for the purpose of providing power. The first post was correct though, in that the fishing was getting pretty good out there. Hopefully alot of the fish stay in the system, and they don't have to drop it a full 30', as that would just leave a couple small places for fish. There is tons of structure in that pond, almost too much at times...hehehe. Taking some photos while it is down, will be a big help for us I am sure. Will have to check on the actual work being done. I'd hate to think they'd have to do this every 20 years. The drawdown surely wouldn't hurt the stretches below. Edited by Reef Hawg 1/12/2007 10:36 AM

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I would like to go there and video the shore lines from the frozen middle section. What a great way to learn the structure and hot spots under the water when it's back to full pool. I would be all over that project if that was some of my home muskie waters. What a great time to learn that flowage if you have not fished it.

Posts: 217 Location: ladysmith, wi | I plan on helping as much as possible, from what i have been told they are planning on adding islands, rock reefs ,more cribs ect, i know this will improve the fishery in the long run but will this lowering mean a big fish kill or die off like the bullheads in 1985 and if so i was told there is no plan on any restocking by the wdnr, is muskies inc planning on anything in regards to stocking? and yes mike i plan on mapping all the new structure once it is done, also does anyone know if they allow fishing on the flowage once the drawdown has begun.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Typically fishing is still allowed on the system when drawn down as it will be the original river channel then. That was said to be the case on High Falls Flowage when one of the last verified 50 lbers in WI was caught. However, game fishing was closed this year on a few lakes in Central WI, due to a drawdown on them. The lake association put that into play. Making islands out there? COOL!!

Posts: 217 Location: ladysmith, wi | the cost of the project is $300,000 to be raised through donations, i am part of the local bass club we donated 5000 and rusk county just commited 75,000, so it looks like we are on the way to making one great fishery
