....well not exactly but pretty close. For the past three weeks I have been exploring mexico and belize (and getting credits) through my university. We spent three days on an island on the second largest barrier reef in the world off the coast of Belize.
In total I caught three Baracuda, the biggest 45.5". The downside of it was the airlines lost two of my rods and one of a friends. The only rod I had was a 4.5' telescoping ultralight.
The first day there I caught about a 25" on a regular jackpot, no leader, it was great, drag screaming, and an explosive hit in one foot of water on a grass flat while wading around the island. I was pumped.

On the last day of the trip we were fishing around the island with dead sardines with no luck. we downsized to cut up sardines, I caught a baby cuda. I ventured out onto the dock where I had seen the big one sitting the day before, but I couldn't get her to hit a lure or a dead sardine. Luckily she was there again, but there was another young mand fishing there, with a big cuda catiously avoiding his dead sardine. So I recommended a down size. we each put on a piece of cut meat. he casted back to the big fish and I casted of to the side.... Instantly I hooked up! with a small jack(about 10") but this really spiked the cuda's interest, she came over and studied my potential catch.... and gulped it down! the small fish disappeared, I layed into here hard, my rod doubled over and the fight was on. She made many good runs and one huge jump where she went completley air born for 10 horizontal feet. after about ten minutes a beached her.
The meat was given to the resort. and I ended up with a great memory. This all happened literally minutes before our ship was headed back to the mainland so i didn't get to enjoy any of what I was told to be great table fare.
Here are a couple pics.

Weird, I recently read somewhere that they were poisonous to eat. Maybe that could be from what they eat in certain locations?

Nice pics!

'Cuda are insane! I caught a 28" baby that was more viscious a fighter than the biggest Muskie that ever lived. Awesome! I was using an 8' heavy bass grade spinning rod, a Quantum Energy PTI reel with 50# Spectron, and cast a 5" Yozuri twitch bait. burn that bait as fast as possible, and those 'Cuda hit it like a freight train.

Nice work. Its amazing how a struggling fish really trips the trigger on the cudas. Sometimes its impossible to get your dinner in the boat without a cuda ripping it in half. Other times just the shadow of your lure will scare them off. Here's one of the larger ones I've actually landed.

Cool story

As you are probably aware now salt water fish tend to be much tougher once hooked. The biggest difference between cuda and muskie for my money is that the cuda is much more likely to eat. they like to sit under a fishing boat and chop off any fish you hook and try to get past them. I have had 20 pound king Mackeral hooked and all that comes back to the boat is the head. Those teeth can chop thru fish in and instant.

I don't think you missed out much on the eating though. Most Cuda are kind of musty tasting and in a lot of the carrabean they concentrate toxins in thier meat being a top predator and so most of us who fish salt water do not eat them but release them to fight another day.

And caught on a 4.5' Rod? That must have been a blast! I'll give you an "A" for extra credit.

Awesome picture. Do you have any stats on that fish. Years ago I fished a chartered boat off San Diego and caught over a dozen but none that matched that size. Lots of fun

my bro can probably give a better estimate then i could about the size of the fish. but to give you an idea... im on the left about 5'10" 170 lbs and thedude is about 5'10" 180 lbs. without a doubt the biggest cuda i have seen much less seen caught. and if u cant tell he is struggling to hold it up. quite a thrill to land...

It ripped a 20 inch amberjack in half right at boatside and then ate a Jackpot. Hell of a fight on light muskie gear.

Is there any Cuda fishing in Jamaica?

I told the wife I would finally join her on a go to warm weather in the winter vacation next winter. She has her heart set on Jamaica. If I could swing the $$$ we would go to the Baja.

The other fish I would like to catch would be a huge tuna.

Anyone know if Jamaica can offer either and if so what is the best time of the year to go for good fishing?

Thanks for your help.

I'll be at the show sometime on Saturday...not sure about when....I have a job next week at Bay Ship in Sturgeon Bay that may go into Saturday but hopefully not....If I don't get enough time there on Saturday, I will be there Sunday too because I have a room at the Midway for the swap.

I look forward to talking to you Matt, and everyone else too!

Awesome Pics!!! I would love to land a Cuda. I was bit off twice last year while flyfishing for Bonefish by Cudas, man did they hit my bait. Enjoy the rest of the trip of a lifetime.
