Posts: 3482 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | A class is being offered in Hastings, MN on March 31st. The class registration cost is $19.00 and the components for the rod run $107 that is paid when at the beginning of the class. The instructor is Gary Wick, who I have talked to about the blanks we will be using. They are 7'-6" extra heavy blanks he has custom designed and evidently, thorn Bros uses them for some of their custom built rods, so it sounds like a pretty good blank. He stated they are heavy enough to handle the big dawgs being thrown these days... the class will go through finding the spine, placing the guides, glue-up of all components, thread tying, etc. The only thing not done in the class is the finish over the thread...but you have the option to go to his shop and do that as well. The class takes a total of 20 people maximum, and there are ONLY 19 spots left. Come have some fun if you are in the TC area. I believe we need at least 5 people to sign up to have the class. Posts: 177 Location: Cohasset, MN | Is it $19 registration plus $107 for the class ($126 total) ? - and is the finish over the thread included in the total ? I don't know Larry Thompson personally but my boy was a junior on the LS football team this past season.

Posts: 3482 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | The finishing glue-up is included in the price. $126 is the total cost to you. you have the choice of having him finish it up, or he will invite you to his shop to do it yourself. Steve

Gary's a great guy, I've had him build about six rods for me and I love every one of them. The blank he uses is his own that he imports, I have a 7'10" and he's building me 8'6" right now, was there today and it looks awsome. The blank is very comparable to a Diamondback, he also does reel repair. Garys Custom Rod and Reel in Coon Rapids 763 4270631

Posts: 676 Location: Wisconsin | Anyone know if you can bring your own blank? I have been eyeing the new tournament legend rod blanks from Croix....would be a nice base. This is a really kick butt class, I wish I still lived in the cities (still thinking about coming up for that weekend). Hope that someone down here would put together something like that....

At the prices quoted, he is not profiting from selling the blanks and components. I would say that for anyone interested, this is a very good deal. I built my own rod, but did not have any of the specialized tools. It seems like every year about this time, a bunch of people post on how to build a rod. Sounds like a great opportunity. Tom B

Posts: 676 Location: Wisconsin | I'd pay the 100 bucks and still bring my own blank. That would be good experience to gain....

Gary also will teach you how at his home during the day. I'm sure he would let you use any blank you wanted. In the classes he keeps pretty standardized due to time restrictions. He keeps many styles of blanks in stock or can order anything. I just ordered a 7'6" mh blank that I will build a spinning rod, it will be my first attempt so I'm really looking forward to it.
