How may other Musky shows have there been?

I find the show disappointing. This post will be pulled, but if I said the show was great it would stay.

Go figure.

interesting...and wrong.
if you're disappointed, you're disappointed.
if you like it, you like it.
we only pull broad-brush bashes or personal attacks.
individual opinion is something we encourage: WHY does someone like the show? WHY disappointment?

television shows are a business. advertisers only pay for viewers.
if enough people like it and watch it, it'll get renewed.
if not enough people watch it, it'll get cancelled.

Fair enough ...

The origins of my disappointment with the show are numerous and as follows:

The host of this show becomes more patronizing to the guests/fishing partners as the show progresses. I have watched fishing shows before, and aside from the host of Simply Fishing having a compulsion to control every single action/interaction ... I have never seen a fishing show where the host(s) actually looks down or treats show partners like they are of a lesser stature.

The episode when the host was fishing with Jim Bortz (who I understand to be an accomplished guide and Musky veteran), he was physically patted on the back at least four times that I counted. I found this patronizing, condescending and somewhat of an embarrassment. When the host actually ordered Jim Bortz to "get the net" to land his own fish ... I almost fell out of my chair.

Endorsing lures definitely appears to be a no-no on The Musky Hunter (unless it's a Salmo lure and they are a paid sponsor of the show). However, one would think it prudent to inform the viewers of at least the CATEGORY of lures being used (crankbait, spinner, etc). I found myself having to scoot up in my chair to try and get a glimpse of what was being thrown, while the camera work reflected that the baits being thrown were actually "off limits" to the shows viewers.

Not informing the viewers of WHERE the men were fishing was a first for me. I have watched the Linders, Bill Dance, Gaddabout Gaddis back in the "Flying Fisherman" days, etc. and always heard mention of where the fishing was taking place.

The depth of information imparted on the viewers (when compared to Musky Hunter magazine or ESOX Angler) can best be termed FLUFF. Good information to convert Bass fisherman towards Musky fishing, but hardly anything groundbreaking for guys that actively fish for and study Muskies.

The fact that 45% of the air time is devoted to commercials. During events such as the Academy Awards or even the Super Bowl; these events might air 30% of air time to commercials rather than a whopping 45%.

So much thought went into what should be hidden and unsaid to the viewers that I was impressed with how these omissions and slights diminished how good this show could have really been.

Without question I enjoy watching guys catch big Muskies, no doubt about that. Unfortunately, the catching footage is simply not enough for me to rant and rave about how great I think this show is.

These are my critiques leading to my disappointment. I don't believe that there is anything here that could be deemed "a personal attack," unless describing actual behaviors falls into that category.

An interesting view point. I like the show, except I crave a musky show anytime that I can find one. I have noticed that they didn't mention the lures or the location very often. Although they did mention the Shallow Invader on the latest episode. I find it informative and the footage well done. I was watching an episode of Hanker Parker today where he jokingly blamed his camera man for missing a big fish because he got in the way. I don't find Saric to be negative to his guests. I DVR all of the shows that I can get my hands on to pass me through the winter months. I like the Apprentice too, others do not...that's okay by me!

The show can be viewed at www.thesportsmanchannel.com Five dollars a month is all it costs to get a ton of outdoor shows right on the internet. I've been watching the show from 6,000 miles away here in Europe. It is shown at 1:30 P.M. EST on Sunday afternoons and several more times during the week. As long as you have a broadband internet connection that will allow you to view it, you won't have a problem. Oh, by the way, the first month of the subscription is free.

Hey all,
I was wondering if any of you have a dvd recorder? Not a DVR but a standalone dvdrecorder. I can't receive the musky shows from up north, due to my decision to have cable over satellite. I woul be happy to reimburse you if you could record them for me. Just PM me and let me know. Thanks ahead of time, Danny

cjrich,
I have not yet seen the show, but I do have an observation.

Whether an article, seminar, or television program, those who produce, distribute, and make public our muskie 'entertainment' are quite aware that not everyone will rave about the content. It's impossible to meet everyone's expectations without producing diametrically opposed programming at times.

Expectations is the key term. Some viewers will be very impressed with the educational content, impressed with the host's abilities, persona, and abilities to entertain and or educate. Some will be less impressed, and some not at all impressed. Had Mr. Saric behaved as you expected, some would be critical that he was not forceful enough, or was too educational at the expense of entertainment. I've heard critical commentary about fishing show hosts that they are 'condescending' because they educate TOO much. Impossible to please everybody, hence the ratings on any one particular show will be what they are based on how well the show does with the average viewer.

Millions of dollars per year go into demographic research to find out what expectations are from each category within each demographic. Programs are placed/sponsored to specifically target a segment or segments, in order to meet the requirements of the companies sponsoring the show. To do anything different in the main stream media is certain trouble for the show. Cable has huge possibilities as far as potential audience, true enough, but just because Fox Sports North is piped in to millions of households it does NOT mean everyone who has the channel is tuned in to the same show. I get a kick out of the cable TV sports oriented media kits sent out to sponsors that claim 'millions of households' when a few thousand actually watch the show.

Cable and satellite have opened up opportunities for shows to be a bit less targeted and a lot less 'slick' than network television demands. Cable allows small companies like Musky Hunter and The Next Bite to air programming off the main stream to the viewers they feel will be their target market. For every one that obtains enough sponsorship buy airtime on the cable channels, there are dozens that never make it that far because they don't understand what drives the market and what sponsors are looking for. A successful show has to air content that will keep the targeted audience watching. Even if you are not wowed, if you watch the next episode they were successful at least twice; at least in your case.

As far as what will be deleted here and what won't, lambeau did a good job explaining it. I'd add that if when you read a post you placed here it sounds belligerent, confrontational, unduly critical, mean, angry, etc. to you, it probably won't last. Why don't we allow 'train wreck' threads and posts?

We have our own audience to entertain and educate here at MuskieFIRST, too.

Sure! Just trying to respond to the concerns you voiced, hope what I posted helps clear up some of the issues you raised.

After watching Directv all afternoon, I WISH there was a Muskie show on.
