In what situations will you guys throw jerkbaits? Do you guys mostly throw them around rocks instead of weeds? In cold front conditions? On windy days? I just started musky fishing this year and was wondering what you guys feel is the best time to throw them. Thanks for the help!

I like them early and late in the year for sure, like them in wind or bad weather too. I'll throw them whenever I don't have confidence in a bucktail or other faster bait in the summer, but not too often. No set rules - some lakes they are good all the time - use whatever you are confident in or whatever will keep you awake when things get slow.

I really like to throw suicks over the tops of weeds.
My number one bait this last fall was a 10" suick worked over the last green weeks, making sure I was contacting those weeds seemed to be the key.

Lets face it, Jerkbaits are fun to throw!!! You are constantly moving the rod and it keeps you "in the moment". All year long when you feel like it. Maybe not the best search baits (glide baits especially (if we are including them) but they sure as heck trigger fish.

They can be thrown any time. A general rule of thumb, the colder the water the more and longer you pause it. If you have good summer temps you can work them very fast and cover lots of water. I had an opprotunity to throw the EZ Riser from lakeshore lure company and I really like this new jerkbait.

only if they won't eat a bucktail or spinnerbait, there are much better hooking and holding baits than jerkbaits.

I have customers that won't throw anything else. I use them alot more late in the summer and into fall, than I do in the spring, but that's just me.

I'm more of a glider guy than a classic jerkbait guy, but I do throw suicks and bobbies and a few others.

They are great baits and they do tend to catch bigger fish, at least in my experience they do.

I'll add to that list only after bucktails, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits. I like crashing Suicks into shallow rocks and they are exceptional worked methodically in weed beds. Have only caught one, albeit my PB, have moved several, but lost a few more than I would like.

I know others that fish LOTW who almost never take a Suick/Bobby off, NEVER.

I like to do what Padro said. Hard to believe but suicks are amazingly weedless (to a point). I experimented a few years ago with just pulling a suick into the weeds, then let it back out, and drive it in again. Hardly any weeds and the muskies seemed to like it more when it was coming in contact with the weeds.

I use them everytime out, most of the fish I caught are on a jerkbait. They work the best over the weed tops but I've had fished them in all depths of water. I learned from the EXTREME One about the ways of a Suick and have never been disappointed in the results.

I use mostly gliders and one if not two of my poles is always rigged with one. On heavily pressured lakes they seem to be the only thing fish will hit at times along with plastics. I agree that if fish will hit bucktails or spinnerbaits thats the way to go (and when in Canada thats mostly what I use) but where I usually fish I use gliders at least 90% of the time in weeds, timber, and rocks... Jerkbaits are AWSOME!

Love jerk baits too, always have 1 rod with one ready to go.
My guess is I toss one 75% of my time while casting.
We are making a jerk bait (EZ-E Rizer) for the '07 season.
The one ToddM mentioned.
Measures 10" long, weighs 5 ounces, #6 wide gap
treble hooks. Durable clear coat finish & it dives down
to 6' with very little effort.

Everytime out . I probably throw more jerkbaits then anything else. I think that the larger profile and the slow moving baits make a easier target for fish .Jerkbaits , with their stop and go action fit the bill.

Just my $.02 worth

Injury being the key word here. For an opportunistic predator, this action is often more than they can take.. I always have a 10" Suick wired-on. I fish mostly reservoirs that a stacked full of baitfish. At times Muskies need only lunge forward with their mouths open and feeding time is adjourn. Give them something that's not weak or sick, but otherwise healthy yet injured and they will move on it alot of the time.. Like it was mentioned, alot of fun to throw....

I noticed when it stops moving, it's also food............................RaZe

I can get muskies moving on jerk baits when nothing else will. Paul's EZ Riser is my new favorite along with my trusty Suicks

Where can the public check out the EZ Rizer. Also can anyone who has used the bait let us know how it is worked? How is it in the weeds? I'm always looking for more baits like a Suick. Also almost all Suicks need tuning when you buy them it doesn't appear that this bait does am I correct? Also will this bait withstand a beating from the rocks. I had some success banging a Suick on shallow rocks but it just doesn't handle the abuse well because of the wood construction. Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff,
You are correct, no need for tuning.
We are introducing them at the Milwaukee Show: February 9, 10 & 11.
Our booth numer is 215.
Stealth Tackle will be with us too.
You will be able to see a demonstration of how it works in the hawg trough.
Our wesbite sales will be available that same week end as well.
Right now we are just taking phone orders, either credit card or money order.
You can reach us at 773-374-6645 or on my cell 312-719-4894.
Thank you for your interest.

I love jerkbaits, so, I will throw them here or there, I will throw them everywhere. I also throw them all season long.

The jerkbaits that I use, I know them VERY well and can make them do things. Because of that, I feel that they are the most versatile baits that I have, right below jigs and tubes.

That ez-e riser looks like a great jerkbait. I definitely need to learn to throw more non-gliding jerkbaits. Heres an awesome picture of a 24" fish that was pulled out of weeds growing to the surface...working that p-ron-ah as fast as possible.
