Location: Minneapolis, MN | Just got a new boat and need some rod holders to mount to a rail. Any suggestions? Down East? Bulletproof? Also, what are the pros and cons of the ones you suggest?

Location: Racine, Wi | I second the Down Easters. They are easy to install, and if you want to adjust the angle of your rod to the water, you just have to push the butt of the rod up or down. |

| It depends on what you want to do with the rod holders. For my down rods I use the DownEaster but for anything else they are a PITA! Unless your rod is pointed down that it might fall out I would not want them. I much prefer the Lock-Tite or even a plastic Scotty. I know people don't like plastic Scotty's but I have used them for years on my Dipsey Diver rods without a problem and there is A LOT more preasure from a Dipsey than from a musky bait. |

| I have switched to Folbe this year. I got tired of the Scotty's always popping up and out. The Folbe had a locking device on the mount, and it stays where you put it. The rod holder itself is unique, and slides to open and close. It is also lockable, to prevent unwanted action. Used them for a bit last year, and was impressed. The new Tuffy 1890 will have all Folbe's this year. |

| For serious muskie trolling, from my experience machined aluminum [bulletproof] or cast aluminum [downeaster] are the only way to go.
Plastic rod holders work well for other species. Banging 10"+ baits off the bottom is not for the faint of heart nor flimsy rod holders.
Since I started fishing for muskies I have had to upgrade everything. At first I learned the hard way by losing my largest fish so far because of medium strength gear. When the big girl comes a calling again, I am ready now. |

| The Folbe rod holders are for all types of trolling AKA SPEED trolling at least to 10mph on any thing besides the GREAT big stuff.Prop wash,Lead balls,20oz spinnerbaits, you name it.Folbes are as good as if not better than Downeasterns due to their different mounts they have in stock.Al Nutty and I recieved some of the first ones to hit the MUSKY market.The King Salmon fisherman in the the North West have had them earlyier,So Folbe decided to test the musky market.If they could handle a 60# King the could handle a MUSKY.2 1/2 years later,4 tournyments,a 1st-2nd-5th-and 5th,and #s of fish up to 48"!!!!!!!!!!No problems what so ever!
Try them out You WILL like them!

| I will give them a look. They would be the first synthetic rod holder that can handle hard core trolling. I had a scotty malfunction that left a loomis shimano setup in the water. Lucky I was back on the kicker and was able grab it before it sank. lol |

| As Smoker said, the Folbe Rod Holders were designed in the Pacific Northwest for the King Salmon anglers. Now, the toughest type of fishing on my rod holders was Lake Michigan salmon. And the biggest fish I've had on were around 25 pounds or so. These things were way harder on the gear than any musky I've caught trolling, including fish to high 40's on Lake St Claire. I can't imagine the violence of the strike, and the extreme pressure a 60 pound plus King would put on the rod holders. If they can stand up to that, I'm not worried about any musky. I am impressed with the construction and features of the Folbe Rod Holders. |

| Folbes all the way. I never lock them when they're turned sideways, but for a propwash presentation this would be best. They're a glass-filled nylon, don't get cold or brittle like other plastics do, and they're very secure. Really like using the extender post as this gets them further up off the rail, and allows me to really stick the tips down underwater...this helps for some of the aggressive turns that Smoker knows we do at times...(LOL...we've been known to get distracted and make sharp turns close-in to the shoreline!)

| The extensions are 6" tall, and really helps get a better angle if you put your rodtips in the water while trolling (to keep weeds and debris from sliding down the line and fouling your lure...this tip down position also gets your bait a little deeper, and allows you to maintain better awareness of where your lure is!)

Location: Green Bay, WI | Does anyone know if the bolt pattern matches the Scotty side mounts or have measurements? I'm hoping the holes match up so I can just swap the mounts to replace my Scottys and Fish-On holders with Folbes.... and swap back when I sell the boat. 
Scotty and Fish-On side mounts are the same size and have the bolt holes in the same locations.

| The Scotty's are about .040" wider. This should not be an issue in most applications. The Folbe's share the exact same bolt pattern as the Fish-on, Ram, and Attwood/Roberts.
I won't have my boat at the Milwaukee Expo afterall. But I will bring some Folbe stuff with me if anyone wants to see it.
