Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Geocache, Anyone?

Ok, here's something completely different. It involves muskies, eventually, so bear with me....

I've become interested in "geocaching", a new outdoors scavenger hunt sorta thing based on use of the handheld GPS. Here's how it works - you stash a "treasure" like a pirate would and mark the spot's coordinates using your GPS. Then you post the GPS coordinates and any location hints on the internet. People actually travel around finding these "geocaches". The deal is, when you find one you can take the treasure but you must leave a treasure for the next seeker. You also sign your name and where you're from. I'm planning on establishing a "musky geocache" in the spring on a particular body of water I fish. I won't have the coordinates to share until I have the treasure in place, but here's the post that will go out just after I place the cache. Again, I'll have to repost later with the GPS coordinates.

What do you think of this (nonsense)? Me, I wouldn't travel to find one of the regular geocaches, but I would travel to a good new musky lake to fish if I knew I could spot the geocache spot from my boat.

Ranger's Geocache Whim

Commotion and splashing from out on the water
suddenly startled the river's fair daughter.
A duck had been taken with fury and force,
then another went under, three! now the fourth!
Yup, a big momma musky was eatin' em all,
as momma muskies will do in the colorful fall.

The girl stood and looked as lake became silent
her eye was quite caught by a shape on the island.
She saw there an X, made of wood strong and pure
stashed underneath is a small box with a lure!
(She saw the X hanging, but not the small box
'cause the box is all buried in a small pile of rocks.)

That big momma musky she's a magical fish,
to protect the lake's critters she granted my wish.
The big momma musky she's blessed the small prize
to catch a 50"er and I tell thee no lies……but……
A ritual of sorts must be completed by you
you must utter 6 words and then see they come true.
The spell you must live by to enable the charm?
"I'll always release my muskies unharmed."

The magic is true, I know this for real
I left part of myself with the fish in the deal.
The life force I gave will be used as it should
to help make things better, to help create good.
Now I'm never alone; I'm part of the waters,
related like family to eagles and otters
and leaches and 'skeeters and weeds and the sand
We all play a part in the grand cosmic plan.
This is not just for me, this now includes you, too,
But I digress down this path, so, anyhoo…..

Those who can locate Ranger's Geocache Whim,
Are welcome to take home the lure that's within.
But fail this one rule and you'll suffer my anger:
You must leave a cool lure for the next noble angler.
Remember, to catch a big trophy you must say the spell!
That's it. I am done. Adios. Fare thee well.

Ranger dude...never used a GPS...usually just go by if it's light or dark or follow the scent of a grill wafting in the breeze but it sounds good to me!!! The talent on this board never ceases to amaze me...each day I look forward to the display of abstract knowledge that can be gleaned from the many fine tuned minds in the fishing world![:0] [:sun:]
