How does it look so far? The willow leaf blades got changed out with #10 Colorado blade and the rubber skirting replaced with tinsel. The tinsel seems to breath much better behind those big blades. Cost is still a factor and is still high. Hard to find cheaper components that are high quality. Quality and ruggedness being the #1 priority here of course. I want a bucktail that lasts 3-4X+++ longer than a Mepps Marabou or the like.

Dominatrix Specifications:
* 11"
* 4oz. (115g)
* 062" Heavy Wire
* 0.040" Thick #10 Colorado Blades
* Two 5/0 VMC Extra Strong Muskie Hooks
* Wolverine Triple Split Rings

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,
James

Where do you find your .062 wire?  i'd like to use that sometimes instead of the .051 I buy from Dick Moores.

You should ask Dick if he could get some in. I am sure he would if he knew sales would come.

Got mine in role form but here is some with the front loop already made. 12" pieces.

Showgirls look like Mepps and some other older bucktails to me. lol 99% of those making baits today are copying lures made many many years ago.
JMO

The Dominatrix has some heavier components on it and it is a heavier lure too. Different skirting, heavier clasps, etc. If anything it is closer to a Double X but longer.

James

Guests are so nice on this site. It's funny I get the same type of responses from people and guests all the time. This is why no one should be allowed to post or comment on anything unless they become a member.

I guess it makes them feel better about themselves for trying to stick it to someone else.

Nice lure. I make one similar but the blades aren't as big.

Ya this one pulls hard with the #10s. I was thinking on using #8s. Also, you can see this uses 5/0 hooks. I think you get a better hook up with 5/0 but, I think muskie fishermen like to see 7/0 on these big bucktails. Any thoughts?

James

PS-I see you copied the infamous perch pattern from none other than a perch himself! lol

PSS-Post a pic of the ones you make. Would love to see it.

I had it up once before but here it is again.

The Flash is a little thicker, 3/0 hook at the front with a 5/0 in the back, dual size 8 Colorado Blades. Nothing too fancy but it sure puts them in the boat.

Actually Guest, it looks like a xx in a double cowgirl's dress.

I would play with heavier wire, but I think it may hinder the vibration. May be a good addition to other big double blades with lighter wire. Just a thought.

I like the heavy wire myself. I like heavy duty bucktails. As for the tinsel, I used a lighter tinsel material to "breath" more behind the big #10 colorado blades.

As for the #3-#5 hook combo in the above picture, do you think you get better hook up with that rig than just two #7s? Just curious if you have had the luck to test the two situations on some fish...

You can put 2 7/0's or whatever you want. As long as they're sharp and at least 3/0 you'll be ok. I like the 5/0 and 3/0 set up because the hooks hide in the tail a little easier. Most of my fish come on the rear hook anyway. I have had a few T-bone these lures. That's when the small 3/0 takes over. I was testing a small one in the summer and it had 2 2/0 hooks and the on third cast I caught a 39 incher. Talk about the right place at the right time.

Some ideas.........You have to have a front hook below the blades.Most of my fish on XX's and the like have come on the front hook, especially at night.Big bait, big hooks. 7/0 Mustad 3551. Short supply right now for some reason.Spacing is crucial.For hooks and beads.Attatch the front hook on rings so it can swing.Shrink tube the back hook or you'll have a tangled mess.A lot of weight(overall) will shorten the lifespan of the bait(wire and tail material) and make it easier for a fish to throw.Something to consider.Good luck with your project. Thanks Steve! Most of what you mentioned is on my bait. The only thing that is not is the first hook placement. I did not think of that. Still have a lot to do and check on this before I would even start thinking of making it for sale. The other negative is, this cost a lot to make. I now understand why others charge $20+ for these bucktails! I alway sthoguht th eprice would be trivial. LOL!

Thanks again.

lol at the copy talk here. IMO most everything in the US is a copy and has been for teh last 50 years. Ya 2% isn't but the rest is. If anything is novel it has a patent or a secret nobody can figure out. Don't see many lures with patents so, most must not be novel. One blade, two blades, steel lip, lexan lip fat body, skinny body ong short, etc is not novel to me in teh world of baits. Show me a lure that has a sound making device in it that makes muskies want to hump the crap out of it and I will call that one novel !!!! lol

Nice lures guys! Looked at that Grunt too James and I will be emailing you soon! Want a custom paint job on a jonted if you can do it. Nothing special just certain colors in one of your patterns. My novel lure idea for my secret muskie lake here in Iowa

Just got some parts in from Dick..I'm toying with tinsel, too. I'd like to get some of the heavier stuff like you have grunt. Do you have a place to get it?

Here's a pic of one I made up with a glow blade....I'm going to put some together with glow tinsel too....might make for a great dark time bait!

Still looking for a good source for the heavy stuff. Sounds like teh stuff Cowgirls gets are custom made for them. I know witchcraft can custom make stuff but, you woudl have to buy a LOT to get it from them. Stamina has ten inch length stuff:

http://www.staminainc.com/hook_luredressing/flashabou_accent.html
http://www.staminainc.com/hook_luredressing/flashabou.html

I am guessing Dick Moore might have some insight into sources too:

Hope that helps,
