Why do Muskie porpoise? I have seen several on the Lake I fish. They are not followers or strikers.

No known answer here...several different hyphotheses but nobody knows for sure. Oh yeah and if you haven't heard, you will never catch a fish after it porpoises...

Do not know the reason why they do it but i have caught 1 tiger musky taht was porpoising and had others including pures follow after doing so. I have a feeling this maybe something no one will ever know the answer to as i have always wondered myself and always get different explanations.

They always seem to do it on days when you aren't seeing any fish, usually after someone says "Dude, there's no muskies in this lake!"

Not sure why they do, but it is worth throwing several casts at them! I have caught at least a dozen by doing so...

Don't know why, but always worth a few casts ( ya never know ) catching them is not common from my experience, but a buddy of mine scored a near 40" tiger, a number of years ago after it porpoised. We chased it down and he threw a Buchertail across it's back, the fish whipped around and inhaled the bait.
Also....Do not neglect to check out unidentified fishy sounding splashes !!!
My largest muskie to date came, after fishing down one side of a channel into an island on Whitefish Bay. We got to the back end of the channel and were working the other side back out, when I heard the splash behind me from an area we had just fished. I looked to locate a possible beaver, otter, or loon? Nothing, don't know how to explain the feeling I just got, but there was no question, I was finding out what made that noise. I don't even think I told my partner, but just cut right back across the channel to the other side. I made my cast about where I thought the sound came from. I looked up to see a large tail gently break the surface as it dissapeared moving in the direction of my sinking spring dawg. I feel a subtle bump and my line goes momentarily slack-rear back ...heavy weight, line quickly rising aaghhhh quick bury the rod. This next moment is forever chiseled into my
mind( this was in 2003) Big muskie gets half way out of the water in slow motion. Giant head shakes coming right toward the back of the boat about 10' away, a couple runs and into the net. 52.5 X24 is the reason I always
check things out!

its such a bizarre thing to see but ive seen tigers, pures, and pike do this many times. Alot of old timers will say "theyre looking for ducks!" which is hilarious IMO, but the one that makes the most sense to me is possibly using the warmer surface temps to help metabolize a meal quicker? But that doesnt explain why they run their heads to the gills out of the water though.

Not sure why they do it but it is worth casting at. I seen 1 this summer and threw at it after about 5 cast it pounded a top raider nice 41". Thought it was pretty bizarre After I new it was a muskie I think I have seen it a few times just always thought it was just carp.

If I had to take a guess, I would say that they might get a gulp of air to help regulate their swim bladder in order to sit shallow after coming out of deeper water. Ive thrown at many but only have 2 or 3 after the porpoise.

Theories abound on this one. Each year it seems the same question is brought up with a multitude of answers. To me, one must look at their physiology and the differences between physostomes (swim bladder has an open connection to the outside world) and physoclists (swim bladder is closed off from the surrounding environment). Google "pneumatic duct swim bladder." The pneumatic duct enables a physostome to ingest or expel air in an attempt to regulate the swim bladder.

Ya know no matter where you are fishin or the type of structure you are on or no matter the mood these fish are in just remember they are NEVER very far away from you and it seems like some times they just seem to come up and check out what's going on up there they are just being top of the line predictors and we are so lucky to be able to chase them around
