| im having trouble deciding on which minn kota? i want the powerdrive for my new 16'6 crestliner mainly because of the price of 350.00 compared to 580.00 for the maxxum. my knowlegable fishin friend says you only see maxxums on pros boats for a reason. he says you cant stay on specific structure with a powerdrive like you can with a maxxum. is the response time that much different? i see the all terrain is basically the same motor except the mount is alot smaller. whats the difference between maxxum and all terrain?why are cable steers so much better than elecs.? is it just the response time? thank you for any replies... |

I like the Maxxum for many reasons.
First and probably the most important is that I've always used a cable driven trolling motor. I've gotten to the point that I don't ever have to look at what direction the motor is pointed as I can tell the direction just by how my foot is postioned. I also know that to go to the right I push down on the front, and to go to the left I push on the back. After a while boat control is very second nature, and I can do it without ever looking at the trolling motor direction indicator. I also like the fact the I can turn the motor on and off just by lifting my foot off the on button, and I'm constantly using this feature to either speed up or slow down when fishing an area depending on whether I think an area is the worth a few extra casts or not. If a fish is following I just take my foor of the trolling motor and the motor becomes silent, which I like when a fish is near the boat. I think my boat control is much better with a cable system.
I also use a stand-up seat and I'm mostly setting down the whole time I'm fishing. I don't think that standing on one leg and trying to fish would be much fun. Boat control in the areas that I fish are the main reason I use a cable system.
The other thing about a cable system is that it's much faster in response time as far as turning the direction of the trolling motor. I've used a motor driven system a few times and I just couldn't do what I wanted to do with it.
I would guess that if you are fishing long weed beds or areas that don't have a lot of unanounced obstructions (rocks, logs, stumps) that you need to avoid at the last second that the motor driven ones would be great.
I'm in Kentucky fishing stripers and pulling live bait, and I know that an Auto Pilot system would be much better than a Maxxum for that. All the guides down here are using them, for good reason, but the requirements are much different.
I haven't used a all-terrain but I think the main differance is in the mount. The Maxxums are very heavy duty, depending on what you are going to do and the number of hours you will be using the trolling motor the all-terrain may be just fine.

| I have used a lot of different trollers in the past twenty odd years of tournaments and my far and away favorite is the Minnkota Maxxum. Super powerful, quick response and if you are one of those guys that like going into the real slop and crud this is your motor. I wish that this troller had come along years ago. I have a model 74 Maxxum on a 519 Ranger and can run all weekend on a charge if need be. Best trolling motor I have ever owned. Mike |

| L.M. there is a good discussion of this already on this board in the Boats and Motors section.
Username that started the thread was "AWH". Do a search and you will find plenty of info.
I vote for Maxxum.

| Doug hit the nail on the head.
I like to keep it simple and too many bells and whistles cause too many problems.
I run a Maxxumm and I am very very happy with it. The petal is comfortable and the unit is quick to respond for boat control. |

| I have a 65lb. thrust Minn Kota Power Drive on the front of my 20' Tuffy Esox Deep-V and I never had a problem staying on any spots with it. I fished plenty of open water lakes with big rollers and I never had a problem. The micro touch foot pedal is the key for me. Being vertically challenged and all - I need to keep my feet as close to the ground as I can (LOL)! |

| I use a Minn Kota 65lb Power Drive on my Esox Mag. and absolutely love it. I went away from the cable operated motors last season and don't miss them at all. I went with the Power Drive for the reason that Jason Smith said. Too many bells and whistles on the Auot Pilot and the Genesis.
Last season Minn Kota increased the speed in which the head of the Power Drive unit responds and that was a big factor for me switching.
The other thing I never liked about the cable operated units was the fact that I always felt so much "feedback" in the pedal when I was running the motor in heavy current areas and going into the wind. Also when you were running into the wind and took your foot off of the pedal the head of the motor always swung off course.
Another big factor is that I can run my Power Drive from anywhere in my boat.
Lastly I use my Power Drive different than 95% of the musky fisherman out there. I never have it on constant on. I use my heel to turn the power on and then just roll my foot left or right to turn the boat. In essence it is the same as a cable operated just without the cables. God bless.
