I have watched many anglers modifying their Bull Dawgs,
in fact on the CAVE some really stange ways of changing the DAWG has been successful.
How do you modify your BullDawgs and when???

(though again a pro only in the bedroom) I modify my dawgs in 2 ways: a. when the back end of the tail comes off, i put on an EXTRA long tail, one dawg is at least 16" long (one 50"+ follow to her credit) and b. I have inserted rattle chambers into the rear belly of a Mag Dawg, without any results, though with little useage. If any of you have become real dawg-addicts like me, think of ditching the lighter or heated knife tricks for Canine Surgery, and instead get a CARMELIZER, looks like a crack pipe torch. Very affective, too bad my partners won't let me bring mine with me on the boat.

I use a cutter knife to cut open the tail part and free the treble hook. I rmeove it and add two bucher splitrings and a smaller size 3/0 eagle claw treble. Then I close the cut again with glue or heat-melt it.

Next I remove the single hook on the back because often pike tend to swallow these bull dawg lures. Then I reduce the size of the front treble also to a 3/0 eagle claw.

SOmetimes I add a small tailspinner to the dawg but this hasn't procued fish at all so far.

Also, I tried removing some lead (from the belly side) to make it sink slower.

Tony, I learned a modification from Bill Burns, yeah the same Burns from your neck of the woods. I will try to explain. Cut off the center single hook. Take the split rings and hooks off the bait. Take the small looped wire that the front hook was attached to and push it up through the body of the bait. I used a small medical long nosed pliers called a hemostat)spelling). The loop will just peek out of the top of the bait. Put the split ring and treblew back in place. Next I take a small section of leader material, about 2 to 2.5 inches in length. Make a loop on each end. I attach this section to the front split ring and put another split ring and treble hook on the other end. I then stick one barb of each treble into the top of the bull dawg. It now resembles a quick strike rig. It is fairly weed proof and won't snag on bottom debris. On a strike the hooks often pull out of the bait, again like a quick strike rig, the fish won't be able to use the heavy rubber as leverage to dislodge the hooks.

I also add a blade to the rear of the bull dawg as an attractor. Hope this wasn't too confusing.

Good luck, Murph!

Tony,

A picture of Murphs mods can be seen in one of last summers issues of Musky Hunter.

I have done a similar modification for years with a quick strike type setup and changed a few after seeing Murphs, now the leader wire is on the inside of the body.

It works well, I'll be rigging some of the new unweighted ones that way so I can bring them over the tops of weeds easier, should be a great setup.

Have a great season,
