Howdy. I'd like to ask Darcyfish, Doug Johnson, and any other pro familiar with the Canada side of Lake of the Woods about a trip we may be planning for 2003 for me and my boy (he'll be 16) for a week. We're both life-long anglers, looking for conservation-style fishing. First, what is the best month to come up, considering fishing conditions, bug problems, and weather? We were thinking mid-July. We've received literature from Sunset Country, and it looks like Totem Lodge's Wiley Point has excellent accomodations, White Pine Lodge sent us some stuff, too. Are there others you'd recommend? We're not really looking for outpost-style lodging this trip, maybe I'm getting soft in my old age! Never been to such a big lake and navigation even with a map seems challenging. We'd like to have a guide for the first day and go on our own from there, fishing a variety of species from 'skis to 'eyes, a few trophy lake trout would be ideal. Any help in making our plans would be greatly appreciated (I'd trust using a MuskieFirst pro over one provided by the resort!). Any comments you'd rather not put on a public board can go to: [email protected]. Thanks so much. m

Mike:

Lots of great resorts on the LOTWs, everything from pretty rustic housekeeping to pretty much fully catered American plan. For fishing I quess it depends a little on what species you perfer, but the mid July time frame is usually pretty good. Fine for walleyes, fine for muskies, smallmouths might be off the shorelines a little, but you can still get a few. You'll pick-up a northern or two fishing muskies. For lake trout you'll have to stick pretty close to Whitefish Bay, as most of the rest of the lake doesn't have deep or clear enough water to keep lake trout alive. There is lots of fish in the LOTWs.

The Canadian Hydrographic maps are very accurate, you do need to learn to navigate, but it's not impossible.

There are pretty much always some bugs except when it's frozen. Most of the time when you are on the water they aren't too bad. I wouldn't spend too much time standing on the dock about a half hour before dark.

There are lots of resorts with different web sites, do a google search, www.google.com, and type in Lake of the Woods, there are lots of web sites
with e-mail and 800 numbers.

If you have any futher questions feel free to e-mail me at [email protected].

Hi Mike

Doug pretty well sums it up about what style of accomodations that are out their for your choice.Fishing is usually good in mid July for most species in the area.Whitefish bay is the one of two areas that has Lake trout on LOTW.Sioux Narrows is located on the eastern side of the lake on the shores of Whitefish bay, and has a few places to stay at that could help you out.

Thanks for the sunset country link, already been there and, whew! Did I get responses. At least 24 e-mails within a week, most within a few days, and at least a dozen brochures. I guess at this point I've focused in on the lodging and guide service, now a matter of getting things scheduled and seeing if I can get my financing in order. Thanks a bunch for all the help, I'll stop short of requesting donations! Send mikie to camp fund? Nah. m

You can't go wrong with IndianHead Lodge in Snake Bay, which is part of Whitefish Bay. Tim and Karen McNanny are great hosts and have good cabins. Hope you catch a big one! Dan
