Here's the very first Bluegill I've ever painted up. I'm very pleased with it but it is a lot of work!!!

Looks pretty #*^@ close to a Bluegill to me.

Once again, very nice work. I doubt I will ever be able to paint realistic patterns like that

Looks pretty good to me. I have been working on realistic Bluegill and Crappie gliders for a month now. Alot of work is an understatement.

That's a beauty.
I tried for year to try and make "the perfect bluegill".
I'd take pictures of them and go through books and gather as much as I could.
Then it occured to me that there are about 7 different strains of bluegills, so which one am I trying to duplicate?
Part of one and part of another?
So last year when I was fishing with my daughter, we paid attention to what caught our eye when we hooked and reeled in bluegills. We decided that out of the 2 strains that we were catching, the ones that were very golden and had a bright throat usually didn't have as pronounced stripes. The ones with the darker bars had less bright color to them, but a larger darker spot.
So I settled on a hybrid with a green base and bars and a dark spot along with the orange throat and 2 shades of gold, being a brighter gold scale over an "oranger" gold. Figuring that the bars and the dot along with the orange and gold would give them something to look "bluegillish" enough. I've included a pic of some that I painted recently that don't have a clear coat on them. When the next coat of clear is done, I'll post a picture of one.
I guarantee that it won't look anything like a Snax.
I'd be tempted to filet that one myself.
Honestly, I don't think that I would fish with one of your lures if I ever got one. They are like pieces of art. I wouldn't want to take the chance of ruining it.

Thanks Beaver! I could always make up one for displaying and one for catching fish.
Nice job on the ones you posted. They have that instantly recognizable Bluegill essence to them.

The one thing I personally strive for is to first try to get the shape of a baitfish I'm trying to replicate. Once that profile is looking realistic, the paint job will look even better on top of it. I think there are so many great lure painters that post on here and we all have our uniqueness and place. The reason I try not to do more generic looking paintjobs is that I'd get really bored with doing it. I enjoy trying to top each bait with closer attention to details and colours.

At the end of the day though, they are made to catch fish and thankfully, they do that very well. I'd rather see them hanging from the mouth of a big, safely released fish than just sitting on a wall.

I'm the first one to admit that I take lure painting to the extreme. It's not necessary to do all the tiny details that I do to make a lure resemble a certain baitfish. Beaver captures the inportant features very well and has a great reputation for good reason.

Hey snax bait looks great. Have you stopped carving the lips and gills now and just paint them on to achieve the life like look? Again really like it.

Great question. I still carve the mouths of all my baits but found that by utilizing my painting ability, I can make the gills appear carved in which cuts down on production time. Once the thick epoxy top coats are applied, the carved in features would pretty much be filled in anyway.

I appreciate all the nice comments and I continue to try to outdo myself with every batch.

I will be selling them for sure and I just added it to my website along with the Crappie which shares the same body.
Price is $40 US.

Anyone interested please shoot me an email at [email protected], thanks.
By the way, the next time I'm able to contribute to a muskiefirst event, I'll be sure to donate a Bluegill as a prize.

Thanks again for all the nice comments.

I ordered one of novaks truelife crappie gliders and boated a nice 45'' musky the first time out with it. Snax if your gill swims half as good as it looks I bet it'll put them in the boat to. You and novak amaze me! You guys must have a ton of time in making those baits. I seen one of novaks baits sell for over 150 bucks a few weeks ago on ebay and bet your guys baits will become huge collector pieces some day. What a bargain at 40 bucks, i'll be putting my order in shortly. s.r

Thanks for the kind words! I agree that the Novak baits look great too and the time put in shows.
I have a video clip on my website of the Crappie in action which has the exact same action as the Bluegill. Feel free to check it out.

By the way, I now have caps with my logo embroidered on them for sale on my website just in time for Christmas. Price is $17.99 + shipping. Thanks again for all the support and have a safe Holiday Season gang.
