Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | To start off, I have never actually held or seen a Weagle in person. However, people make them sound like "big baits." At 8 inches long, and what sounds like a fairly fat bait as well, I guess they would be pretty good sized. My question is, have people found that they are too big to consistently catch low 30 inch fish? "Big fish" baits are great, but in all honesty, the majority of the fish I get action from and catch are between 34-38 inches. Some smaller and some bigger as well. I was just wondering if they would be a good choice to use on those medium sized fish in the mid 30's range. I'm not really talking about fall fishing either. Just an in general year round question. Thanks for any opinions! curleytail

No, actually little muskies love nailing Weagles just like big muskies Check out the Baby Weagle though, another great version but smaller and made of plastic.

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | I have had a pretty good year using the Weagle. I usually fish Big fish waters and have caught 8 muskies on the same weagle, all of them over 40". I don't think that an eight inch lure is to big for any fish over 20 inches. I also cought a few nice bass in the 4-6lb class on the weagle. Its not the size that matters here, its the action of the lure, and the Weagle has a huge amount of action. Later, Jerome

We catch lots of little pike on em to... if they will eat one theres no doubt in my mind that a small musky would even as little as hesitate to eat one.

I probably caught a dozen Largemouth bass on the Weagle again this year...

Small Pike love my W baits, never hooked any size ski on one but I've had allot of acrobatics around the bait, I think the smallest snake last year was around 12-14 inches so it is a small fish bait too.

Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | Big lures equals big fish! IMO I have heard and seen a lot of pictures of muskies taking bait fish and lures half their size. See my webpage devoted to muskies and pike taking on some big meals (sometimes more than they can chew): http://www.gruntmuskielures.com/WhyBigMuskyLures.html As for the 8 inch Wealge. Great all American bait IMO. Throws a lot of water and you can throw it all day long. You can work it about 10 different ways too. Muskeis and pike love em. James

Posts: 354 | I once read that the average musky meal is about 33-39% of their length. I have seen nothing to suggest otherwise. It is not at all uncommon to have 34" fish attack an eight inch bait.

Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | I have caught 40"+ fish with fresh wounds on them. Would love to see the size of fish that goes after a 40"+ fish! It was not during spawning either it was mid summer. Ya, the Weagle and other baits 8-16 inches are just snacks to these big boys! lol

Posts: 194 | This is not exactly an apples to apples comparison, but I had a 26" pike and a 28" muskie get caught trying to eat 18" suckers last year. It convinced me that there is no bait too big for any size muskie, epsecially one that's only 8".

No, 6 in Lg. Mouth is my smallest weagle fish. The bait was bigger than the fish for sure, to funny.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Thanks guys. I supposed I realized that an 8 inch perch or sucker is no match for any catchable sized musky. I was just thinking along the lines of most walleyes could eat a 6 inch bait too, but we usually fish for them with 3-5 inch stuff. Anyway, it sounds and looks like I won't be missing fish by using the Weagles, so I will have to order a couple this year. Thanks for the help! curleytail

Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | curleytail Here is a nice walleye on a 9 inch Suick. Odd I must admit. I have went to this place for a few years and never caught a walleye like this with a suick. lol Attachments ---------------- kevin-walleye-suick-titled.jpg (14KB - 92 downloads)

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | That is a nice walleye. Certainly bigger than the average size I catch. To scale, that 9" suick is about like a #10 Husky Jerk in comparison to most walleyes I catch. lol. I would say the average walleye I catch is between 14-16 inches. So far, I have not caught a walleye while musky fishing. curleytail

Posts: 714 Location: Rhinelander, WI | I agree there is no doubt that a musky can and will hit almost any size bait from a 1/8 ounce jig and minnow to a 20” sucker. But for all you Weagle nuts how is the HOOKING PERCENTAGE on smaller fish. Walk the dog bait’s are not very good hookers by there very nature, the Weagle and Viper are better because they sit lower in the water and don’t get bounced around as much, but if you where fishing for mid 30” fish and wanted numbers (ie. tourney situation) would you still be tossing the 8” Weagle our would you downsize to the smaller version or would you switch to a different style bait? Thanks. Nail A Pig! Mike

Posts: 32892 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | If it's a topwater bite and a zig zag is my choice, a Weagle it will be. I've hooked the majority of fish that have hit the lure, no matter the size. I don't have more swing and a miss with the Weagle than any other topwater, my observation.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Well, this thread has gone farther than I figured it would! Sworrall, I wish I could catch more walleyes like that while fishing FOR them. Was that walleye also in the shallow (seems like to said something about 1.5 feet of water...or something like that). I have caught a lot of 'eyes in shallow water, especially relating to weeds...just not on a walk the dog topwater.lol Anyway, I realize I started this thread and have never held or seen a Weagle in person, but if you don't mind MRoberts, here is my "assumption" to answer your question. I figure that with the Weagle being a little longer than most WTD baits, and having an extra hook, and sitting low in the water like you said, it would probably have a better hooking percentage across the board. That is, as long as a smaller fish decided to go for it, and could get it's mouth around the thing (which should be easy even for a small fish), it has a good chance of finding the hooks. And I would think that it would be a little easier to find and connect with at least a part of it, due to the larger size also. That's my guess. How did I do Weagle veterans? curleytail

Posts: 2378 | You pretty much nailed it curley. The extra hook and the fact that the Weagle is far less prone to "blow outs" definitely ups the hooking percentage. For anyone that may think the Weagle is too big, you'll have an opportunity to purchase the Baby Weagle again in a couple months or so. I have the blanks and will be offering both the Baby Weagle and the Baby Wabull at the shows this season.

For anyone that may think the Weagle is too big too big? too small! 10" seems like a nice round number.

Posts: 8789 | Two guys, both throwing WTD baits, one was a Weagle. Several blow ups and a fish later and the Weagle hadn't even gotten a sniff... "surprised nobody took a whack at my Weagle..." The guy I was fishing with said: "I'm not. That thing is way too big and makes way too much noise. You're scaring them off, man. Got anything a little more subtle?" Not saying it's always too big, but do you think there's a time and a place where the swoosh and the size of the bait might just be too much??

Posts: 32892 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | SO many variables. Sometimes it's retrieve speed, sometimes lure placement, technique, etc. I've seen days when three anglers are throwing Top Raiders, and only one gets action. Why would one get multiple follows and fish and two almost nothing?
