I have a couple millionaire cvx-253a's (same thing as 250 st croix) and the levelwind does not move on the cast. Its never been a problem for me though.

shouldn't the 300 be non-disengaging? It's a wider spool. I'm thinking about the 300 but I don't want it if the levelwind doesn't stay engaged while casting.

I agree with Schuler I use nothing but Avids and Milionaire CVZ's .

They have performed flawlessly year after year!

we have both and no problems with either. The 250 disengages the level wind during the cast. The 300 does not. At first I didnt like that with the 250 but it has never been a problem because the spool is not very wide. My wife uses them and does so because of the lower profile of these reels. They fit her smaller hands much better. Kingfisher

A disengaging level wind is not a bad thing. I prefer it. A reel cannot cast as well with a non-disengaging levelwind because it moves so slow on the cast not allowing the line to flow as fast.
