Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | I'm liking the last two, but, no offense, they look similar in shape to alot others out there. You got talet. It shows in your paint. apply it to shape. Only one short, fat glider works, and that guy is too busy for me to mention him. |

| I saw it the first time, along with everyone else, in the last response about my lures being similar to other baits. Thanks, I got it.
Not much more out there to do. Everything looks similar to something else. I guess I can make one in the shape of a beer can or or beer bottle but I'm sure it will look like someone elses. I think no matter what I put up here you'll say something about it. I'm not interested in making the next big thing. I just like to paint lures as a hobby.
I'm not doing them to be the next big lure company. I do it for fun and if a should sell a few along the way and get my name out there, so be it.

Youre absolutely correct, many baits are very similar when it comes to the shape. I am like you, just enjoy making
baits and have it as a hobby. Sometimes I make new shapes and try new styles, but sometimes I
get inspired by already existing baits, as everyone else. No big deal as long as its not made for commercial purpose.
Attached you find a pic of a bait I made last year. Its very close to the popular shape youve done... after this
picture was made I gave it yellow spots on the back to make it easier to see in the water.

| The paint is nice no doubt about it, but I would never buy copies of other peoples baits and I know alot of other people that wouldn't either. I have to agree with nightmare, you need to apply your talent to coming up with your own designs and not copying other bait makers designs. Noiseycricket's design is a little similar to some others but thats not copying and I find it's shape unique. Bottom line is how would you like designs you put many hours of experimenting and labor into just to have them copied a week later by someone else. |

I would take the comments about your design with a grain of salt, they look great. Is a Tippy darter similar to a magic maker, is a jake similar to a grandma, how about all the tail rotating topwaters and walk the dog topwaters. There aren't really going to any "breakthrough" designs in muskie fishing baits, thats a simple fact of life. Keep up the good work

| The paint jobs are nice.
I know that I was pist when some of the first posts that were put up were exact copies if my lures.
That happened because the guy who makes my bodies put some extras on e-bay. He had no idea that they would wind up on the same board. At that time, he hadn't heard from me in months, and he thought that I was done making lures and was just painting. Now we are on the same page again. I have a great friendship with the guy who makes my bodies. I trust him and he trusts me. He knows that I'm not buying blanks to resell, and we have worked together on some designs. We have become good friends as well as loyal business associates.
Bucktails are bucktails...they all look alike.

It's the paint jobs, the quality of the top coat and most importantly the weighting and action of the wood baits that get your lures used. I've bought plenty of pretty lures that had action that sucked.
I don't know where the blanks are coming from, or if he makes his own, but that is a relationship that is sacred when you plan on making gliders. I don't know where he gets his, or if he makes his own, or where Novak gets his. I'm glad that my body maker and I have a mutual respect and understanding. I'm not going to tell him that he can't sell certain bodies to anybody, unless there is an "exclusivity contract". Lure blank buiders have to eat too.

I had one guy buy one of my lures just to cut it apart to see how I weight it. Then he admitted it. I think that sucks.
I've been working with my guy for 3 years, just to try to tweak things a little and come up with something a little different every year. Now that we have something that is working, I'll make 7", 8" and 10" in the same body style. He doesn't have to sell them exclusively to me, but he's very careful who he sells them to. He doesn't want to deal with guys who are going to copy what I'm making. Just like the guys who worked with Stan and I with the chrome thing last year. They worked with us for a year to iron the bugs out. Nobody said they had to, but they were stand up guys and dealt with us and we exchanged ideas to come up with different things that we would like to see in paint special effects. They never knew that there was a market for their product in the fishing industry, now they know.
I think most of us have a mutual respect for each other, and think twice about making exact duplicates of someone elses work.
I guess it boils down to having to eat a little crap every once in a while.
I'll still keep making them, because people are catching fish with them. That's what really matters, isn't it?
And I have a loyalty to muskiefirst. You won't see my stuff available anywhere else, unless a few go to e-bay or if somebody resells some of mine.
Seems there are more and more talented people popping up all of the time.
Raises the bar for the rest of us, doesn't it?
I've got a lot of work ahead of me. And like the rest of you, we barely cover the costs....but we do it anyway, don't we?
