Just wondering, without super comment or ripping on whatevers else, what is your go-to reel brand? Ie. which do you have the MOST of?

I use 4 Ambassadeur 6000C reels from the 1970s to cast. Three of the reels have Hi speed gear replacements, the other is original to cast crankbaits. I use three Daiwa SG27LC reels for trolling, they are more than adequate.

Morrums and 6500CL big game are my work horses...rarely if ever break down if properly lubed etc.
Penn 975 for the big bucktails...
Just ordered the new 7000 Big Game with the newly updated power handle, anti reverse and the new carbon drag....Abu's are good reels if you get the right models!

calcutta 400b's ... not smart enough to oil or fix reels ... just use them and then send em in for cleaning at the end of the season. never had a let-down with a calcutta in many years now.

might sniff at a Luna next year though ... heard similar results with them from guys that pound the water hard.

Luna 300 for me and I am also partial to the Shimano Calcutta 400B, both great reels that are very durable

Shimano could film a commercial in my boat. 6 Calcutta 251s, 2 401 TEs, 3 Curados and about 15 Citicas on my Bass rods with at least 4 Symetre spinning reels as well. Oh my God! I am crazy............

I'm suprised to see that Abu is on the top. From personal experience, Abu's can not hold up to the abuse I put on them while the Calcuttas kick ___. I have about 5 of them in working order(a couple almost rebuilt), I just love the Calcuttas. If anyone wants to trade for some lures let me know

Like Brad said, Abus are great reels. You just have to get the right models.

Every mfg out there makes reels that are not up to the abuse we give them.

Daiwa Millionaire (broke)
Shimano Cardiff (breaking)
Abu 6500 C4 (so far so good)
Abu 7000HSN (works, but man it's gettin noisy!)
Abu 6500C3 (still in box)
Abu Record (so far so good)

I'm gonna borrow a quote from a friend of mine:

I never met a reel I couldn't break!

I don't know... ever fish the Fox River in Illinois or the Rock in Southern Wisconsin? Dirty, smelly, muddy...etc (however not polluted anymore :)) The Garcias I've used cant stand that... 3-4 diff. models. The Calcuttas have gone through everything and have caught plenty of fish and they still perform like new. But like any reel, some will have problems, but I'd take Shimanos durability and smoothness over Garcia any day. You can still catch fish and not beat the crap out of your reels.

My opinion only... I know guys that feel the same way about Abu and hate Shimano, but more guys need to try the NEW Calcuttas.

ps. I use to use Abu's only and swore by them...

Just a though Reelwise, would you agree that to some degree, you get what you pay for? I mean, comparing a Calcutta B (the lower model of the series) at $219 to a Abu Garcia Record (top end of the line) at $140, is like comparing a Ford to a BMW/Lexus/Infinity. Both are great buys and deliever comparable to what you paid for them, but if you take the cost savings out, the Ford doesnt exactly match up to the others.

If you want a reel that will last years, and you dont mind the extra cost, buy a Calcutta or Luna. If you dont want to spend the money, but want a quality reel that will require more service, then you have other choices, such as the Abus.

Having used and broken a considerable variety of reels in a very short time, I say buy the best reels you can afford and be done with it.

Yes, there will be problems with some of all of them. But the ones with plastic parts, the ones that are inexpensive, the ones not designed for what you're using them for, they WILL break.

Buy the right reel for the job, buy a good one, and it should last you a long time.

Morrum is my favorite, but I have several of each og the 6500C3's, 6500C5Mag's, and a couple new Recods this year.

Diawa Sealine LC's for trolling, but I still use a couple Shakespeare LC's.

I don't know why Abu ended the Morrum line. I like the new Record, but love my Morrum.

I've seen the EXT's and they look ok...they don't have the "feel" of the solidness of a Morrum..I should have one coming any day to test...I think Abu is making steps in the right direction with the new Big Game line...though I'm not sure about the lever thing to open the bail ...they finally have a nice power handle, instant anti reverse and new drags are very nice...i had Chuck put them in some of my Morrums and 6500CL and they are awesome..talk about smooth even when very tight..thanks Chuck!

We'll see how the EXT holds up like a Morrum....

ABU 6000's for spring fishing with small lures and lighter line, Abu 7000's for summer and fall fishing. I also just picked up the new Big Game reel , the 7000ihsn. Have to wait until next year to try it out though, but a big improvement over the old hsn. With the current trend of larger, and heavier musky baits, 7000 reels are the way to go for their ruggedness and durability. In my opinion, the Swedish built Big Game 7000cl was the best musky fishing reel ever built. Period. Kdawg

Hey Nelson, or anybody I guess, you got a picture of this new Abu power handle? I like the current one fine, but if there is an improvement I wanna see it

I don't get the point of using a 7000 or even a 6500. Why so big? You can get the job done with a smaller reel and be less fatigued.

cardiffs.
not a problem yet.

2 scorpions, same
1 curado

about 5 different spinning reels

i had a calcutta and hated it....started grinding 2 weeks after i used it.

figured, hell, go cheaper with the cardiff..if it breaks, 80 bux won't kill me.
none of the 5 or 6 i have gave me any problems yet

EA, u must have taken casting lessons from Cain....the only shimano he said lasted him more than a week was a corvalus...go figure.

Burn a bucktail with a 5600 all day? That would = fatigue

I have 5 Abu's and 5 shimano's they all wear out!

Think I am getting some Luna's for next year?

LOL Yeti

The Cardiff was actually my first musky reel. I put that thing through reel-hell learning how to use a baitcaster. Probably more bad backlashes and baits stopped with the reel on the Cardiff than all my other reels combined!

The 7000 was my fault too, I think. Caught a log with a dawg and instead of tying the line to the boat cleat and using the boat to pull it free I decided to just thumb the spool hard and rip. I believe that is not a good thing to do to a reel.

The Millionaire fell to a day throwing Weagles. I don't think it's actually broken, the anti reverse might just be gooped up.

I'm not going to pass judgement on any of them as far as quality until I tear them all down, clean them, and oil them...

Good advice...pulling on a snagged log can break reels anti-reverse. I did it to a Penn 9m a couple weeks ago.
