I would like to get some history on these baits. They are the jerkbaits with a flat butt and belly and a slanted head.

What was the name of these things? (sorry MuskyDr, I forgot what you said they were called)
When were they made?
Where were they made?
Who made them?
What kind of wood are they made out of?

Any other information that people have would be great as well.

The lure was called the L&L Exciter and was made by Mike Lyga in Depere, WI.

I think you can still buy them from Dick Moore yet today.

JLong is correct. It was the exciter. A good bait for many years. Check some of the old MuskiesInc. records and you'll see it listed with lots of fish to its credit. It was called L&L because it was made by Mike Lyga and Mike Leahy (Sp.?) Mike is now retired from teaching and spent quite a bit of time up on LOTW this summer/fall. He did quite well too! Mike is still doing fish mounts and some excellent graphite reproductions. Very reasonalbly priced when compared to others. Mike still lives in DePere, Wisconsin and has a few of them left. If you want I can pass along a phone number and he will tell you all you need to know. PM me if interested.

Chuck, those guys nailed it. After hearing my buddy Chuck Schauer tell me of al the fish they nailed on them back in the day, i picked up a few from Chuck, and love them. I beleive Dick Moore still has some, and think he has someone making them now, but not sure. Other than that, the Wades Wobbler is about the closest thing I've seen for action, though the size is bigger than the exciter. The old exciters came in about 3 weights if I remember right, and a couple sizes. I liked the lightest one, or the one that popped back up the most quickly. Try Moores. Also check with Baitmaker tackle out of Port Edwards. I took a few exciters to him a few years ago to duplicate. Not sure if he is still doing so or not.

Yup... Lyga and Leahy were my teachers in High School. Anyone remember the L&L Spooner? Surpised noone is copying that bait these days (heh heh).

I believe the Exciter that Dick Moore is selling is the exact same lure as that originally made by L&L.... meaning he gets his wood blanks from the same guy who supplied L&L back in the 80's when that bait was smokin' hot. In fact, that bait is what got me into the "suspending lure" tinkering mode. Schillinger commented that he likes the "light" one's that back up super fast like a Sledge.... but the uncoated Pine lure body of the Exciter eventually soaks up water and the lure suspends.... like the original Stalkers. Tony Rizzo loved the larger Exciters in the 80's because he could work them down in the 12' zone. Not many lures at that time could effectively work that deep.... especially jerkbaits. And... I'm speculating... but I suspect that the Exciter was Rizzo's inspiration to develop the Big-T.

Thanks Chuck for sending me on a trip down memory lane. The 80's was a fun time and these guys (L&L) taught me a lot back then.

Memory lane is right!!! I personally think the Stalkers are way better than the L&Ls. The L&Ls only have two hooks. For me that meant poor hookups. Although a longer rod may help in that department. I love the deep diver/suspending version of either bait. They are a great open water fish catching lure. They were the Bulldog of their day. A few years back Rod Grimme of Lip Ripper lures was trying to add the Stalker to his line. I am not sure where he is with that. Good luck getting some!!!!

Thanks again for ALL of the feedback, information and comments guys. I knew that there had to be people out there that had some insight on these baits.

I have a Stalker as well. I still like my L&L though. I like what I believe is the one that Jason S. likes, the one that rises a little quicker. I like how it "backs up" back into the face of the fish.

If anyone knows where I may be able to get my hands on one or two more of the original L&L's, please let me know. I would be more than happy to trade for them. I think that the green "L&L" on the belly of the bait is what is triggering the fish. LOL Actually, so many people purchase companies and try to duplicate the baits, but they are never the same. They try to improve something that works fine already. IF the same blanks are being used that are made by the same person from years gone by, these may be different in that they are still what I am looking for.

I also like the simplistic look of the bait when compared to the baits made by many of the companies today. Simple baits for simple minds I guess. LOL

Glad to take you down memory lane Mr. Long. I think that many people get wrapped up in all of the new baits and forget about the old reliables from yester-year. Heck, many of the guys on here were probably not even born yet when these were the baits to go with.

How I got hooked on them was from a guy in college at Point. I wish I could remember his name, but we had some classes together. The name Chris keeps coming to mind. He was a musky head as well from I believe Appleton. Heck, he may be someone that is a regular on this board. I believe he was doing some testing for the guys and he knew I was headed to the Three Lakes Chain for a weekend. He let me use one of his that was a brighter green. I saw a musky on it and caught a pike. I liked it so much that I went and purchased one when I saw them in a store.

Using some of the old baits and catching fish on them is fun. Heck, catching fish period is fun. Like I said before though, I would like to get my hands on one or two more of the originals. I am sure that there are guys out there that just have them collecting dust in their garage. I say garage because most people probably do not even keep them in their tackle box any longer. They are probably sitting on some shelf or burried in some box with a bunch of other baits that are not used any longer.

Chuck, I'm pretty confident that the Exciter you'd get from Dick Moore IS the original. Dick and Mike were good friends. Heck, Mike is who originally introduced me to Dick Moore.... so I doubt much has changed with the lure. Same blank. Same cotter pins. Same light coat of paint/lacquer. What else could change.... other than not having that small plastic L&L sticker on the belly that usually fell off with a few days anyway???

Also, I sold a few of my Exciters on Ebay last winter... but I may have a few still layin' around. Or maybe a blank or two from back when I help Mike make them (I was cheap labor to help paint and package them... or assemble his bucktails). I'll take a look tonight and let ya know.

And Mr. Reiter.... love that Stalker. That is one ugly lure... and it don't do much in the water.... but I know you've caught LOTS of fish on it. But... its lures like that that make we wonder how much the "self fulfilling prophecy" really plays into the equation (heh heh).

Mr Long,

I agree.

"Self fulfilling prophecy"....."Confidence"....."Go to lure". They are all the same. Its more of getting a good one. You know the 1/10 that dances on a straight retrieve and really moves with little or no effort. I have lots of "deadwood" that do nothing. I have a few that are good but have been munched so bad Im worried they only have a few fish left in them!!!

Isnt she a pretty.....how can something that ugly catch that many fish?

Thanks Jason,

Let me know if you have any you want to part with. The bait I have the L&L is actually painted on the belly in green.

I will have to hunt down some of Dick's baits if they are the same.

Thanks again for the info.

Moores has a website where you can order a catalog.

Is the Lapp seeker similar to the stalker?

Long, you mention the self fulfilling prophecy. I am convinced My friend Chuck has written one for the Smitty bait being as good as it is. I cannot get bit with the thing. He makes magic with it...

If I remember correctly the painted on L and L is the very first ones and they where made out of basswood and they rotted easy (had a few do that on me) but where light. The ones with the sticker is the change to pine. Not sure on all of that, you would have to ask Mike. I have a new one with the sticker on in the package and some old ones in the basement. It brings back memorys, caught lots of fish on them.

We have added a "stalker" style bait to our line.
We improved on the paint finish, the quality of wood used, weighting system and hooks.
I tested some today and the action is just awesome.
So easy to work for a dive/rise jerk bait it is insane.
We have both the shallow runner and a deep runner styles.
Feel free to e-mail if you have any questions.
