Posts: 53 | Just wondering if any of you folks have tried out these reels, and what your thoughts are on them. I have a 200 size and love it, but was curious as to your opinions as to whether the 300 would stand up to throwing musky sized spinnerbaits/bucktails all day long. Would there be a better application for this reel? Thanks Mike

i use a smaller scorpion (the japanese built curado) 1501 for bucktails under 4 ounces not a problem.

Posts: 22 | I bought one from Bass Pro already - troubled is I am traveling so I will post once I get home and use it. I have 5 other Curados 200's that I have been using for the last 6 years throwing Musky Lures with 0 problems. The 300 is built to hold over 250 yards of Braided line, 6:2-1 ratio and has been field tested extensively with off shore fishing which is as hard as it gets on a reel. Since the gears are all Calcutta level or higher according to the Shimano people I can tell you that once you rig up a ultra low profile reel on your Musky rod you will never go back to a traditional reel. Great Hunting!!

Posts: 358 Location: London, England | Doesn't the pitifully low retrieve rate get you down? If you make a longish cast with a small spooled reel the line level drops so far that your line retrieve rate is terribly slow for the first half of the retrieve. 7000 size reels are a pain to cart around but make a huge difference for actually fishing.

i know you're a shimano boy, but.. quantum cabo. have two that i've used for jerkbaits, blade baits and even trolling with dipseys for trout. they've held up well and i'm not easy on my gear. it's a bass reel on some serious steroids. the spool is not small, has more line cap than a 6500 series abu but is a much smaller reel physically.

Posts: 53 | Yeah Yeah Raf lol I haven't had a chance to take a look at those reels in person yet, but I do plan to eventually. Thanks for the info!

Tim i've never used a large sized spool like the 7000. i meant nothing by the 28" retrieve....i just figured, with the smaller type lures i'm throwin with that reel, i'm not getting much into the spool....maybe 30 yards or so on a cast. i don't bombcast usually, so i probably wouldnt see the return on a larger sized reel like that. unless when throwing bigger bladed spinners and bucktails...but that's not very often anyway. plus, i figure the speed 6:2.1 kinda would make up for it a little bit, but i could be wrong. i usually just throw conventional thinking on this stuff to thw wind and use what feels right or works well for me. i could see though, where a huge spool/ lower gear rating would make a difference.

Posts: 358 Location: London, England | Didn't want to pick a fight, but I remember years ago having a 6501 on one rod with 100lb power pro and a curado 201 with 50lb PP on them. I tried using the same bait in the same place on both rods and was amazed how I couldn't keep up with the curado, I was having to wind like a dervish to just keep in touch with the bait as we drifted broadside across a flat. The 6501 was fine, despite the larger line diameter. Ever since then I have wondered how people have managed fishing with small reels as they seem totally unsuitable to me. If it works for you though, keep at it, but as general advice for anyone considering buying a small sized reel they should be aware of the potential drawbacks.

Posts: 343 Location: In the slop! | Tim, the spool is bigger on the 300. I would like to have one myself but don't really need another reel. However if I did 'need' one, I wouldn't hesitate a minute, except maybe for the price-tag.
