I need some help with a question. In the opinion of everyone here. Why is there no one buying tow vehicles during Ford Truck Month? As you know I am working at Stillwater Ford in Stillwater MN. Ford has some programs going with rebates or 0% financing right now. There is virtually no buyers in the market right now. Your opinions please. None of the brands are selling very well this month, there has to be a reason. Our Toyota store is not even very busy. Election year or what?

Uh, gas prices has dropped, but they were at around $3.35 in the Chicago area.....I figure others are feeling like I am, "it was bad, and will get back there again sometime in the future". Kind of takes a little time before people forget that, and indulge in buys like a gas gulping truck.

Maybe because there are so many great used vehicles on the market?
I bought new once and never will again...I know a lady up in MN that gets vehicles from the dealer auction and it's silly to buy new if you ask me...I can get a 1 yr old vehicle barely broke in and save 30-35% off sticker

Gas prices & election aside, we're also approaching a traditionally lean time of the year. The market is uninspired during October & then from November through February, Christmas bills are siphoning everyone's wallet.

i'm looking for a new truck right now, and looked at the prices of a new last-year model '06.
the prices are still too high.
even when getting 0% interest on an '06, the difference between the price on a low-mileage '04 or an '05 outweights the financing rate difference.
lower your prices and give me a call...you know what i want.

If you think the market for trucks is soft, check out the upper end real estate market in whatever area you're in. Brutal.

It's tough out there.

Man, I'd love to be in a new truck this fall. I told myself when I bought the present rig that I wanted it to last 10 years. Well, 10 years is coming up on Oct 30th, and at 187,000 miles, this truck is still purring like a kitten. No rust, looks and rides great. Still can pull my boat, when I get it, and get decent mileage. They sure don't make them like they used to! Best truck I ever had.

Everyday I drive this truck I save money. So, now my plan has been to start making payments to myself, drive this rig rig till she won't go no more, and then pay cash for a new Super Duty! Mike, I'll give you a call when that day arrives.

Shep,

I have the same problem. My F150 will be 10 in February. With 113,000 miles and never having a problem it is going to be hard to part with. My main problem is my family is starting to outgrow it. A four door is in the future!!!!

Mike

I think the big reason is gas prices, high gas has put a ton of used SUV and truck on the market with low miles and cheap. I was looking at updating my avalahnce, could pick up a 04 with 25K for under $20. When most trucks and suv are 10-15k under the sticker of a new truck with less than 30K on the motor hard to justify spending the extra money.

i'd say the biggest thing is most people are just plain BROKE these days. with increased property taxes to make up for tax cuts elsewhere, the increase in gas as well as natural gas and electricity and just about every other life necessity, the dollar gets stretched further and further. i know alot of guys in the contruction trades that have been laid off already for the season and others who know its coming soon.
people i know who would buy new and trade in every 2 or 3 years are now either leasing or driving their "old" vehicles until they HAVE to buy something else....doesnt seem to be as many people buying just because they WANT a new vehicle like there was up until the past couple years. almost everyone i know is pinching pennies these day( probably because i dont know anyone in that upper 1% income bracket!!)

people just cant spend what they dont have

No matter how good a deal you think you might be getting, buying a brand new vehicle is never a good deal in my opinion. I did it once and will never do it again. I'll stick with buying vehicles from 2-4 years old then sell after another 2-4 years and do it again so I'm not the one taking the biggest hit on the depreciation of the vehicle and having to stick a lot into it for repairs for worn parts etc...

On this one, ask a hundred people, you'll get a hundred different answers....

I agree with Lockjaw somewhat. I bought new, but never will again. Next time I'll buy 2-4 years old, take good care of it, and run it into the ground.

In the last twelve months, I've had to spend about $2500 in regular and repair maintenance on my '99 Chev with 120k on the clock. But that's still *way* cheaper than buying a new equivalent, even if I had to spend that much every year for the rest of it's life (shoudn't have to).

Some people argue with me that it will eventually 'nickel and dime' me to death. I don't believe that to ever be the case for a personal vehicle. It's more economical to repair than replace with new, unless you're talking about a total loss due to wreck or something like that.

So to answer the original question, I'm not buying a new Ford during Ford Truck Month because it just isn't a good value for me.

my dad brought me up saying you should never buy a new one for the fact that you lose so much value the first year or so you own it,and he's right!!!! i have a 97 f-150 4wd ex-cab that has never let me down since ive owned it!!! sure theres things that get replaced or fixed, but i get complaments all the time on it,and cant believe its almost ten years old!!! and the best part........she hit 200,000 miles about a month ago pulling my boat to the lake,it was like a toyota moment!!! ha!!!! and it still uses no oil between changes!!! so how would a new one do me????? it would be nice, but like before, your throwing your money out !!!!! and this is just my opinion.

i guess i disagree somewhat on buying new always being a bad deal. if you qualify for 0% interest on a new truck, you will likely pay less in the long run than buying a used 2 or 3 yr old truck and getting charged anywhere from 4-7.5% interest on a used vehicle. the depreciation on new probably isnt going to be as much as interest on $17,000-$18,000 over the course of the loan.

i know of numerous guys who qualified for the 0%, traded in trucks that were 2 or 3 years old and drove away in a brand new truck WITH A LOWER MONTHLY PAYMENT than what they already had (and not because the term was longer but because there was no interest being paid)

even if it comes out close, personally i'd rather lose $$ to depreciation than to a bank!!

I bought one last month, I picked up a '06 F250 Lariet Crewcab Shortbed Diesel.
I was looking at used trucks and found out about the 0% financing and when I worked the numbers it was around the same $ for the new truck with 0% as it was for the used truck with a home equity loan.

Love the truck too pulls my boat with ease.

Read this a while ago but according to consumer reports, vehicles depreciate in value the slowest when they are between 4 & 8 years old. Before and after that the rate of depreciation is faster from year to year. And ya, if your financing a vehicle I guess that does make a difference in the long run when your talking 0% vs more for used. Another thing to consider is if you trade or not. I don't know about other states but in WI when you trade you only pay tax on the difference between the trade in value of your vehicle and the price your paying for the new vehicle. Sometimes that actually can be a better deal than selling your vehicle yourself and then buying a new or newer one. Depends on how willing the dealer is to negotiate trade in value and the price of the new or newer vehicle your buying. I do prefer buying from private parties vs dealers though. I feel like I can trust them more since they aren't trying to make a living selling cars. And I really don't care much for the dealers that have the 1 set price for everyone and won't negotiate. Just a personal thing I guess cuz some people do like that. There are obviously a lot of variables you have to consider when buying/selling.

sure, you can get a good interest rate on a new truck right now, but part of the problem with dropping demand for trucks (which is what lead Ford to offer the 0% deal), is that the value of used vehicles drops right along with it. ie., your truck is depreciating faster now than it would have been 3 years ago.
you'll get less trying to sell it, and you'll get less trade-in value too.

I have been trying to sell my 2002 F-150 FX4 with 90K for a while now ... advertised in two popular online sites and in the paper for $12K. Book is something like $15K and I haven't had one serious call in over a month! So it's not just new trucks!!!

I bought a '04 3/4 ton suburban in Oct. of '03. Paid $48K and 0% interest fo 3 years. Just made the last payment. Went to the dealer to buy a new one, they offered me $17K on a trade, but I couldn't get 0% financing, so I'm not going to get a new suburban. Soon as they go back to 0% financing, I'll buy a new one. I think the 0% financing works well!!

What is so great about 0% finance, do some homework and it is just a marketing ploy to sell vehicles, you get one of 2 options. 0% financing or 5K in Cash back or dealer discounts(just using numbers). If you take the discount and finance the truck you will probably be money ahead, then paying full retail with 0% interest.

Just because you get the 0% financing doesn't mean you have to pay full MSRP. I am a Ford employee and I will give away My remaining X-Plans (4) if anyone here is interested in a new truck. You will get 3-6K off of the sticker PLUS any available rebates or financing (0%). I get 4 A-plans and 4 Xplans every year. I can't give the A's away but the X's are for friends so anyone can use them. Go to the dealer and ask them for the employee plan pricing sheet ( they have to show you this) tell them you have a sponsor. If you like the deal contact me. And I'll process it with Dearborn and get you your PIN usually about 24 hrs.
