Subject: deck for a bow mount electric

Bought a bench-seat 16' aluminum this spring and after one season, I know i will have to go to a bow mount electric vs my transom one. Any suggestions would be appreciated for adding one to a boat that has no forward 'upper deck', if you could call it that. What product would hold up the best, how thick it should be...I don't have a clue yet as to how long a shaft will be needed to reach the water by the bow. What do you attach the 'wood' to the gunnel with, and, here's a good one, the gunnel's top edge may not be parallel with the wood deck. What would one use to 'fill in' the difference. Thanks a bunch, Bruce.

What do the mfg's use on their boats? Wood under the carpet? Aluminum? The skin from my hull comes up inside the gunnels, and takes up a little of the room in there. But if I put a screw in every 1/8 of an inch, that should hold it.

Hey Bruce,

I built a custom deck for my old lund pike 18 ss. It originally had that big domed front cover that most lunds had in the late 70's, not made to step on or mount to. I removed the old curved cover and replaced it with a solid piece of 3/4 plywood. I used thompson water seal on it and glued carpet on the top. I mounted it flat to my gunnels using large self tapping screws. Most of the time the wires for a bow light run through the gunnels, so you may have to re-run those. Or at least check for shorts after screwing the deck down. I mounted my deck with 6 1/4'' self tappers and have had no problems. It has never come loose, or given me any trouble. I mounted a 55 lb thrust maxuum to it 5 years ago and it works great. I stand on it all the time, and I'm a big boy. I built a rear casting deck for my boat using the same materials. Both setups work great. It's nice to see someone else is fishing an old boat.

hope this helps

Thanks for the info Wolfie. Looked at the boat today and it looks like the gunnels are level. Probably go with an electric that will use 24 volts. I' ll put the batteries below on a level 'deck' and maybe build a platform above the batteries to stand on too. Question on the length of those self tappers.... was that 6-1/4" screws, going thru 3/4 ply?? I must have read that wrong right? OR an error on your end??? Luckily, I had trouble running the lighting wire thru the gunnels so it is under the seats for now. Know of anyone that has tried that release 'plate' that is offered from Minnkota? Wonder how secure that is? Thanks, Bruce.
