My 150 optimax overheats at lower rpms( 1000-1500). I know that the opti run on lower water psi. than other dfi motors. I am having the impeler replaced but I'm not convinced that is the problem. I would like to hear if anyone has had similar problems or advice. Thanks

I have a 150 Opti that had the same problem a few times. It usually only happend in water over 80 degrees when I was moving at low RPM in no wake areas for extended periods. I replaced the impellor and it helped. I understand Mercury has an update kit that your dealer can order that improves the cooling at low RPM. Since my problem didn't persist I didn't get around to having it installed. You might want to ask Sherm the Opti guru on the Merucry motor board at Bass Boat Central.

Posts: 5874 | Mike, what do you suggest when I'm in a no-wake zone for 20 minutes while on my way up the Fox and out onto Green Bay? Mine runs fine at lower speeds. Sounds like an impellor to me. However, it is possible that some crud got stuck up inside the cooling passages, and is restricting flow. Possible that using the flush out would clear this. I've not heard of a low RPM cooling update. I'll check it out. I'm not so sure they run at lower water PSI than other motors. Mine has about 6 PSI at 1000 RPM, 4.5 at Idle, and over 20 at WOT. I do know the fuel injector pressure is lower than other motors, ie. Evinrude, and Yamaha. Edited by Shep 4/12/2005 2:40 PM

Explain why you would never run an opti at low rpms for more than ten minutes. I know guys that troll all day with them.

Posts: 507 | The problem with trolling with a big block is mostly speed; it's tough to get them idled down enough, and the prop is usually optimized for top end. The 150 Opti is a great engine, and will not 'blow' from trolling. It might do what any big block will do and 'load up' from time to time, but using the Opti Max oil will help assure that won't happen.

When you say it overheats, did you get a warning horn? There are 3 different senders for overheat, one on each head, and one on the compressor. Have them look at the computer and if it was the compressor that is overheating could be a small screen were the hose connects to the adapter plate. It will look like you have good water pressure, but not getting enough water to the compressor.

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | Sherm at BBC is defintely a guy worth contacting about optimax's. He has a shop in Indiana, Wabash I think.. Highly reccomended by many as a great opti tech, including mercury themselves.

the warning horn sounds and I get a water temp. icon on my smartcraft. The water temp was 194degrees. According to the dealer where I got my boat and motor, my water pressure is fine. It is about 1.5-2 psi at idle. I wish mercury would list more specs in the manual. What is the hottest my motor should run. Even before the overheating problem began, the motor was running in the mid 170 degree range at trolling speed(3-4mph).That seems hot to me.
