i know that in the fall many people turn their attention to livebait fishing, crankbaits, or even gliders.

but what about bucktails?
do you keep using them when the weather turns cold?

what conditions make you reach for the effeciency of the bucktail over the hangtime of a jerkbait?

what technique changes do you make when throwing hair this time of year?

Is it fall yet?

The only fish I saw last Sunday was following a small in-line bucktail that I was reeling nearly as fast as I could. So who knows - that probably shouldn't have worked, huh? I still use hair in the fall, but haven't been consistently productive w/ it. Sometimes I reason that turnover conditions dictate that I need a bait w/ vibration and sound coupled w/ enough casts that I can drag it past enough fish faces that at least one will be interested. Flock shooting for muskies...
Now if I do encounter a fish w/ said tactics and it doesn't commit, I usually try a slower, hard bodied bait. Post-turnover after the water clears, I usually use cranks, jerks and gliders.

And a word of caution about my comments: I get schooled by all of my fall-fishing visitors from out of state. Even if they only bring 3 (yes, three) baits with them. And only one of those baits should have worked...

Just like topwater, bucktails and spinnerbaits can be used ice out until ice up. Some muskies remain shallow until ice up, and oftentimes over open water they are searching baitfish and suspended high in the water column

I've seen fish caught right up until last week of the season on hair. I especially like to "slow roll" a spinner bait in the fall. Fish them slow and deep and you might be pleased with the results. Same deal with large inline bucktails.

I was really surprised that during our recent Minnesota outing, hair baits only produced one, very small, muskie.
Musta been the cold front. m

Last fall, for the first time in a LONG time, I tried to be committed to throwing BIG Joe's & BIG Bucktails....I caught a number of fish on BOTH. What i've realized, these past 3 or 4 years is this...with the right blades, and the right speed, bucktails will produce ALL season. One of the reasons most leave the bucktails, is this.....

EVERYONE SAYS BUCKTAILS DON'T CATCH FISH IN THE FALL ! ! !

So, I am throwing them this fall, and I think I'm gonna catch a PIG on one!!

what are the "right" blades and the right speed? big and slow?
(i know this is asking for broad generalizations, that's ok)

why do most of us ( and i use to be guilty of this) think that colder water temps mean baits have to be moving slow??? if you want to just move your baits slow in the fall you might be missing out on some fish....the more open minded we can be as musky fishermen..the better we will become...

One of the things I have really learned the last couple seasons is baits moving fast in cold, and I mean cold temps..can and do get hit..

don't ever give up on speed as a factor even when temps are colllllld....

sure there are some days they want it slow...but some days the speed can get them going....

I toss bucktails and spinnerbaits to the end...(i remember a cold Jan. day this year I got wacked by an Indiani ski throwing a Stanleys! ) blades work all times of the year......any bait they hit during the summer can and will work in the fall...

just gotta have confidence in it !

I vote for big and slow. I will be throwing some double #10's late into the year this year.

Slowing them down and hanging on.
