Posts: 427 Location: Planet Meltdown | For you trolling guys that fish alone a lot, what is the best way to manage boat control after you hook up? I'm new to trolling and things can get hairy quickly if you're not careful especially on windy days fishing alone. I saw another boat trolling the other day and the guy had his trolling motor deployed and at first I thought maybe be didn't realize but after thinking about it some more maybe this is was the answer, hook up, grab the rod, put the engine in neutral, trolling motor on auto anchor. Although I'm not sure if it's good for the trolling motor though. I can just see it now......forget about the trolling motor after trolling and gun it and boom there goes your $1700 ipilot lol. Posts: 684 Location: Sycamore, IL | I fish alone a lot and do a fair amount of trolling. On windy days, I will leave my bow mount trolling motor deployed and use it to control the boat when I hook up, as you describe. Good luck!

Posts: 427 Location: Planet Meltdown | Yeah I'm worried about trolling close to structure and the shoreline in windy conditions. Thanks for the tips.

Posts: 134 | I think a lot of guys troll with their electric motor down because their transducer is up front in the head of the motor. Get a more up to date return on your graph then if its in the back. I know if im fishing by myself and its getting hairy, ill limit the amount of rods I have in the water first off. If you cant fish certain spots due to conditions then so be it. Its not worth wrecking ur rig.

Mine has a built in transducer but it's sonar only, no DI or side scan and it's linked to my bow unit. Even with only two rods out it got a little hairy the other day on GW. It was really windy. I'm really not worried about wrecking my rig, it's going to get banged up. I'm more concerned about smashing into someone else's boat that's docked or losing a fish because I'm trying to clear the other rod first. I think next time I'm out I'm going to try with the trolling motor deployed. I have ipilot with auto anchor, might as well put it to good use. Edited by brianT 11/10/2013 4:07 PM

Posts: 134 | Brian I was referring to some guys I have seen on the water. My transducer is in the back. I believe you can link your 898 to ur terrova but sure some guys can chime in.

They are linked and I can still program the Terrova to go to waypoints I create on my main unit however the transducer on the Terrova is only linked to my bow unit. You can share transducers if the entire system is linked together with the 5 port hub. I actually bought one but sold it after finding out the ipilot system was only compatible with Lakemaster chips which doesn't make a NE chip. What a disappointment that was. OK that was confusing, I know. haha

Posts: 656 Location: Forest Lake, Mn. | I assume you're talking forward main motor trolling at a fairly good speed? I run a large tiller boat and fish where by law I can only use one line per angler. So I usually fish alone or have 1 other person in the boat so I'm not running multi-line spreads like some of you are. I also hold the rod while I fish and don't use a rod holder, yes even with large hard pulling crankbaits and speed trolling. I just tuck the rod butt under my leg and hold onto the rod fore grip. All I ever do is turn the boat broadside to the fish, towards open water if near shore, and kick the motor into neutral. That way if I have to maneuver the boat while fighting the fish I can just reach down and kick it into gear. With a tiller boat it's easy. The only time I use the bow mount motor trick is when it's really windy and I want to cast a shoreline rather than troll it. I will backtroll into the wind using my 15 horse kicker for speed control and use the bow mount to steer with while casting.

Posts: 222 | Been using my trolling motor down on the woods forever never damaged it at all. You don't know how many times my front graph read 2 ft. but the back graph read 14 ft.saved my ass many of times I rather ding a rock with my front motor then my rear. And now with the I-Pilot and the anchor wow does that help out a lot. You cant always "Go with the wind" it blows you in places you don't want too be!!! Darren

Location: 31 | Before GPS I would troll with my bow mount TM down to pick up the depth 20’ sooner, but after GPS and with today's Lake maps I never put it down anymore. This may change though with the advent of the Lowrance spotlights scan? I still would never use the electric motor while trolling, even by myself I find it pretty easy to just turn the steering wheel and put it in gear if I need to adjust my position while fighting a fish. This past summer I was trolling near Bret Alexander on a windy day and noticed he almost stopped the boat with a tangle or something, he must've hit a wrong button on his electric because the TM spun the boat around about one half times on a dime tangling all nine lines. Although I felt sorry for his clients who lost almost an hour, we couldn't help but chuckle just a little bit as we trolled past while he was cutting lines.

Posts: 1297 Location: Walker, MN | One thing I always do is take the bent rod out of the rod holder and THEN take the boat out of gear. I learned that one the hard way.
