Can anyone tell me where to get an ABU Garcia reel fixed in the Twin Cities?

I have a couple of ABU reels that need to be fixed. I sent both of them into the Pure Fishing/ABU Garcia repair center way back in June and am tired of sending them back and forth. It took over a month to get them back the first time and then they had both reels all messed up. I sent the reels back in again and the reels came back eventually, but they still never fixed the original problems and actually busted one in the process. I need these reels now and can't wait another month to six weeks for those incompetents to mess around and not fix them again.

In summation: ABU-Garcia service is really bad and very expensive.

So, anyone know a place in the metro that can fix ABU reels and not take a month to do it? Somewhere with good service?

I agree, I've taken a couple to Minnetonka outdoors. They've done a great job and I've had them back in couple days.

Actually, maybe some of you ABU guys could help me diagnose the problem. The problem I am having with the two reels now is that the gears don't engage when you start reeling. The crank turns, but the gears do not engage and the handle spins. It will usually engage between two to 25 turns, but its hard to present a bait that way.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is this a parts problem or are the reels dirty or out of adjustment somehow?

One of the reels, a 6500CI, came back from the Spirit Lake ABU center just loaded with some sort of black grease. It actually oosed out of the reel when in use. I cleaned it up as best I could without completely disassembling it, but shortly afterwards it developed the not engaging problem. The other reel, a 6500UC, has been nothing but problems since the day I got it several years ago. It has been sent in a number of times and as soon as one thing is fixed, another problem develops. I don't have even 50 hours on it yet and may just throw it away. The 6500CI has many years of good service and I want that reel fixed.

Any ideas on the engagement issue?

Herb, you need a new clutch arm. The part costs about $4, and I've seen them changed out in less than 5 minutes.

I do all my own repairs, 6500's are pretty easy to disassemble and reassemble. This sounds like a common problem that I see with my reels, and all they usually need is a good cleaning and a little oil. The clutch arm that Slammr mentioned is the culprit, but I've never had to replace one. The arm slides against the inner plate of the handle side of the reel, and once the oil is washed away, and especially when it gets cold outside, the arm won't slide back and the gears won't engage. Just tap on the reel and it usually will pop into gear, but you'll need to clean and oil under the arm when this happens. I usually end up doing this in the boat a few times a year, and it only takes about three minutes once you know what you're doing.

"Reels that stop engaging is a problem for some people. With as many reels that go out on the market, there may be a reel or two that slip through the cracks, but they overall are rare. On the newer reels the culprit is usually the clutch arm. This is a very easy and inexpensive fix. Clutch arms will eventually wear out. What really takes a toll on them is when people engage their reel before the bait hits the water. I have, and will compare this to a truck. Go out to your truck and start it up. Now drop it in neutral and I will disengage the reel. You floor the gas pedal and I will cast a Reef Hawg out as hard as I can. On the count of three you drop it into drive while flooring it and I will engage the reel with the bait still going out full tilt. Something has to give in your transmission and in the reel. In the reel it is going to be the clutch arm."
