I know guys that throw topwaters(with success) from thaw through freeze up.... my last fish of 2005 was on a topwater in november... Granted I fish Indiana mostly... so farther up north in trout waters no idea.. but would think it should not be much different..

There is no bad time to throw topwater, I have taken fish on the opener in low forties water temps and well into November in forties water temps. As for the deeper clear trout lakes, a fish will definately come up 15ft or more for a bait, it's only a couple of shakes of the tail.

Two years ago, Thanksgiving day...air temp 25, water temp 37. Surface baits were the only thing that would move fish.
