I have a 50 HP 2 stroke Mercury with an oil level window located on the front of the motor. I just bought the boat and am wondering how much oil it should be using? I used it over the weekend and ran it for about 15 minutes total and the oil level went down on the locater tube 2 1/2 inches. Not hard full throttle running. I would say a mix of both. Is that the norm usage for this motor? If it went down another 7 inches the oil alarm would go off.

Thanks-Shannon

Is the oil reservoir full? Fill it and use the outboard; if there isn't undue smoking and fouling I'd bet she's OK.

Yes the oil reservoir was completely full before I used it. Don't you think that is a lot of oil to use or not? There was no fouling at all and no smoke. I can see a light film of oil on the bottom of the motor when I open it up but cannot tell if it is a significant amount or not.

The reservoir on that motor isn't very large, so it's a hard call. If it was leaking, it should be obvious because of the mess it would make. If there was excessive use in the motor, it would be 'smoking' out of the exhaust quite a bit more than normal. If it seems excessive, take her in to an authorized Mercury dealer and have her checked out.

We've got the same motor, about 1993 vintage roughly, and can run at least three or four tanks (>10gal each) thru before filling the oil reservoir. Sounds like you are using a lot. Trade it in for a four stroke and get the bonus of no smoke ;>)

eagles,

i run the same motor you have A 94 50 hp OIL INJECTED MERC 2 STROKE. I ran 18 gallons of gas through mine this weekend and the resevoir only used half. I have seen when the oil in the sight tube gets "stuck" or does not reflect the oil in the resevoir. It may then show full one minute and then half the next, when ever the sight guage decideds to work. Your engine, running wide open should burn 25-30 gallons of fuel to a tank of oil. I just fill mine up before every trip. No problems.

2 stroke mercs
mmm smoky!
