I have a new tuffy 1700 and have a 90 opti on it. I was thinking about trading the motor in and upgrading to a 115 or 135. my boat will run 41mph and has a high five ss. prop on it. How much speed will I gain with the upgrade of these two motors? I like my 90 but it struggles getting up skiers out of the hole, plus now that I have gotten used to a little speed I want more. I know this is not the most economical way to do things but live and learn. Thanks for any input

Posts: 32926 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The 115 will give you a few, probably about 5 MPH. The 135 will give a TON, as it's a V6. Mid to upper 50's with that motor, if I remember correctly.

Posts: 5874 | The 135 Opti is probably one of the best motors out there, IMO. Had one on my Lund, and it was flawless for 4 years. Plenty of hole shot, and a great top end. I would expect mid 50's with a full load in that boat. Maybe you would be as well off to sell that boat, and buy new, with the bigger motor on it? Worth checking out, anyway.

I have a 05' 1760 Esox w/150. I max out at 50mph with one person. Upgraded to a temps plus ss prop and got a MUCH better whole shot. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, it looks like the way to go is the 135. Hopefully I can upgrade without breaking the bank. Any guesses as to what the difference would be with my trade in?

Posts: 86 | Regarding the power options on a new 1700.......what would the price increase be to go from the 90opti, to the 115opti or the 135opti? I had a dealer quote me a $1,000 increase when going from a 200hp Opti to a 225hp Opti so I would think the differences in each upgrade on these smaller motors would be lower than that.

i think there's a pretty big jump when you go up to the V6 (135hp)? also, contact a Tuffy dealer and they can give you exact quotes on boats rigged to your specs. http://www.tuffyboats.com/dealer.asp

I think it would be a no brainer to rig the 115hp at least, but if I could pay for my trolling motor and electronics for the price of the upgrade to the 135.....well, that might be too much to bite off. By the way Lambeau, I got your email. Thanks for the thorough breakdown. You certainly covered all the bases and it's a square deal. I'll stay in touch as my shopping progresses. I've narrowed it down to a new Esox 1700GC or your 1760 (if you don't unload it before I make my mind up). Just trying to cover all the bases as this will be my first boat and I don't want to have any regrets with my purchase.

Whew! I got the quote from the dealer to go from a 90 to a 135 and it is steep! The trade in of a used 2006 motor is killin me. Don't know what to do yet. Would the 135 be ok to troll with? I wouldn't be trolling very much, but when I go to Canada I will be doing some night trolling.

I just looked at a 1700 tiller and its only rated for a 60 while the console is rated for a 135. thats a huge differance. I've checked out the rating on similar tin boats and there is not nearly as wide a gap in the 2 ratings. I think 60 is way under powered consideing the size of the 1700. It is a great looking boat but I just can't imagine it being anything but a dog with a 60 on it. Rate it for a 75 and it would be perfect.

Posts: 32926 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The listed ratings on that boat are maxed out EXACTLY at what the US Coast Guard allows, so there isn't any other HP option. It's only 16'10" long but it LOOKS bigger than it is because of the interior design. Any 'tin boat' the same size would be illegal with a larger tiller OR console rating. The boat runs fine with a 60 tiller, topping out in the low 30 range properly rigged. It's actually nearly exactly the same size as the Esox Magnum and has the exact same HP ratings as a result. Oddly, no one ever thinks the Mag would be underpowered with a 60. If you want 75HP rating on a boat with the same interior, look at the 1760 Esox Deep V T. And yes, the 135 Opti Max trolls down OK for Muskie trolling applications.
