I hope it's ok that I am posting this question here Steve.

I bought a new boat 1.5 years ago. Well this summer all the paint on the inside of the boat started yellowing and peeling. I contacted the manufacturer and he explained that he and another popular boat company got some bad paint and that he would repaint it. So here's the deal. I drive the boat up and meet him half way to his shop from my home last weekend. It took me most of one day to get there and back (6 hours total driving time) and it cost me 70 dollars in fuel. He phones yesterday and they have the boat repainted but now he wants me to drive all the way to his shop which is 275 miles one way from my home...about 9 hours total driving time there and back. He has offered me 100 dollars in gas, I'm guessing it will be closer to 150 dollars in fuel based on the last trip.

Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the fact that he repainted the boat without giving me any hassles. However, it does bother me that his failed paint job is costing me 2 days of travel time and more than a hundred dollars in fuel..not to mention the wear and tear on my vehicle towing the boat for 12 hours (both trips).

I really think it would be more fair if he delivered the boat to where I bought it which is 50 miles from here.

I haven't talked to him about going to get the boat yet.

What do you guys think? Am I being unfair in thinking he should deliver it to the point of purchase?

Did you get the boat from a dealer? Did they offer to help out?

I never did contact the dealer...I went straight to the manufacturer. Maybe I should do that?

I'd go get my boat and call it bad luck.

This is an issue that is missed by most consumers when they buy a boat. If the rig needs warranty, most boat builders require the boat is brought to the warranty center or factory by the consumer; it's the responsibility of the owner to get the rig there and pick it up under most warranties I have seen. If the factory is offering to defray some of that cost, accept it graciously and go get your rig.

In some cases, a dealer can help IF a shipment is due in so he can get your boat back to the builder, AND if another is due about the time your rig is ready to be picked up. Otherwise, yes, you can leave the boat with a dealer for transport, but the wait is not worth it most times.

Read the warranty to see what is required.
