Going to Canyon Lake August 12-20. Only fished it for one day a couple of years ago. Have a map that has been marked by some guys in the musky club. Any suggestions anyone has concerning tactics, lures, etc., would be appreciated. I have heard conflicting report on lure size. The lodge owner says that the muskies seem to like bass size baits. Some of the guys I have talked to say to use medium to large muskie baits. Also, some disagreement on color. I have heard that I should throw blue and purple; however, I have also heard that I should throw perch colored baits. Any help would be appreciated. Also, if anyone has a good map, or knows where I can get one, that would be great. Barry Wesley

Posts: 785 | Barry, I have fished that lake a total of two weeks, one opening weekend and the other the second week from the opener. Beings such my advice may not mesh with an August trip, but I always have caught a lot of fish on 6" size musky baits there. Tiger tubes are good, as are burning small bucktails supper fast. Small Grandmas and Jakes get bit also. I also have had some real good days using Hawg wobblers and Tail rotating topwaters. Black & white work well there although a little brown/orange bait was smackin' em hard the last time I was there (2005). You may want to try some larger baits though to weed out some of those low 30" fish if your looking for something bigger. I won't be making it back there for a few years so let me know how you do. -Andy

Thanks for the tips. This parallels what the owner of the lodge posted on their web page. Just wanted a second opinion. Anyone else with information, feel free to chime in. Thanks Barry Wesley

Posts: 6 | Barry, I will be at Canyon the same time frame you will. Staying at Mcintosh. This will be my first time up there. I am going with some friends that have been there and done well on ski's in the past. They primarily used small to medium sized stuff. Also heard purple was a good color on Canyon. Look me up when you get there and we can compare notes throughout the week. My boat is a Ranger 620 green/silver/gold with Mercs

Dear Lonnie, That is great. Looked at McIntosh, but they were already full. I have also heard about purple and blue. I am in a 16' Aires with a 115 Suzuki. This is great. Thanks Barry Wesley

Posts: 14 | I have fished Canyon Lake four years in a row, haven't been back because we knew we could catch fish there everytime, so we decided to have a look at other lakes in the area. We are talking about going back to Canyon Lake for good starting next year. Most productive lake I've been on for muskie, smallies and walleyes. Fish for muskies in the cabbage, rocky points and beaver dams. Nice clear water at the far west end of the lake. Some nice sized fish there too. If you have a camp boat, will need an extra tank of gas to get back. We fished mostly in July when the temperatures were warm. We always started throwing large stuff, but always had to downsize. What worked best for us was Mepps #3-#5 with flourocarbon leaders. Caught a massive amount of high 20's to 30's using this lure. Also 6" lures are about as large as you want to go in the summer. If you're fishing for smallies, find any rock pile on the shoreline, also throwing the Mepps. Would catch 50 a day mostly in the 2lb class. If you're looking for walleyes, find a beaver dam and go about 10-15 feet out and start jigging leeches. If you're catching perch on one side of the boat, jig from the other side and you'll probably catch the walleyes. You just have to slowly work your way around until you find them. You should limit out in 20 minutes if you find a honey hole. There are some huge fish in that lake, had a 50"+ follow behind our boat looking at the trolling motor with a piece of grass caught on it. We tried everything to boat it but to no avail. Also, my brother in law had a 24" muskie on and another 40" muskie hit the smaller one. It was great and caught on video. Very cool! Word is that the northerns are making their way into Canyon Lake through the Indian Lake Chain dam the feeds into Canyon. If you catch one kill it. Let's keep this lake Northern free for as long as possible. Most likely will see a northern through the tunnel if they have infiltrated. Have a great trip! Any other questions, you can email me at [email protected]. By the way, we stayed a Blyths Canyon Lake Lodge all those times. Rugged no nonsense experience.
