Posts: 53 Location: Tomahawk, WI | http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h20/CJW_2006/38.jpg I caught this 38.5" muskie on August 9. On August 6 I caught my very first musky a 25", pics aren't working of that one yet. Anyway the story. On Aug. 7 we were getting ready to head out, I was retying my line on the dock while my mom was casting off of the dock while waiting on me when all of a sudden a big splash about 15 ft. away from the dock got my attention, but I didn't see the fish. My mom said that she saw fins but I just blew it off as a big smallmouth. About 5 mins. later when I was finally stepping into the boat another big splash caught my attention and when I spun around I saw what I knew was a musky leisurly(sp?) swimming back into the water with its long back exposed. We saw it splash again about 40 yds down the shore but had no luck with it that day. I did manage to catch a 17.5" smallie though. On Aug. 9, my late dad's birthday, we headed out and I just decided to fish the shoreline in front of our place again and work our way north because I was having luck there with big smallies and northerns on firetiger and chart. lures. I was using a 6" jointed rapala in firetiger that I had bought the day before. About 20 mins. into it I was casting to the area where I knew the fishing would pick up, about 60 yds down shore from our place, with smallies and northerns and possibly a musky, when I felt a hit and then dead weight. I never knew what would go through my head when I hooked into a good musky. When I felt the weight, pictures of what it could possibly be immediately started to roll through my brain. First was a huge smallmouth, then a huge largemouth, then big northern and finally good sized channelcat. When we finally saw something rise to the surface my mom asked in excitement, is it a big northern? I then saw it again and said no, it's a musky, and I told her to get the net. This is where it got interesting. The only net in the boat was a rubber coated beckman that I had bought about a week and a half earlier, that is about 22"x22" and 12" deep. My mom tried to net it tail first but she shot out of the net on the next try I told her to net it head first. This time it was successful and we got her into the boat. She was hooked well in the corner of the mouth and because of the new net it made her easy to get out and ready for pics and release. I have to thank my mom who made the net job that I never dreamed would have worked and for being there for my first big and legal musky. I have to thank my dad too as it pretty ironic that I caght him on the day that I did. Equipment: 7ft. MH Bill Dance casting rod 65 pnd. Posts: 53 Location: Tomahawk, WI | I should have told you. Yesterday I picked up a new Frabill with the power-lok and the new hoop and handle from Gander. It's an awesome net. Thanks | ||
