Does anyone wear goose down compressible jackets in the fall when temps are near freezing? I am looking to wear one of these with a summer rain jacket over it...instead of a heavy parka or full blown gortex coat..looking to cut down on weight and bulk around the arms and shoulders? Are they breathable? or will they keep moisture in? These jackets only weigh a pound and a half. any feedback would be appreciated. here is a photo of what I am talking about. thanks Mike

Mike,

I've got something similar. The only problem I see is the rod butt getting stuck in the jacket if you switch arms while casting. Those jackets are really puffy but super warm.

Ill second what thedude said. They are warm as can be, but are really puffy and can get in the way. They compress down into a little ball so it would be nice to have for running long distances in the boat or trolling and then dropping it into storage while casting. Cant hurt to head over to a local sporting goods store and check one out for yourself though.

Well then don't switch hands. That should take care of that. Besides its wasted motion.

I wear a snowmobile suit when it gets really cold. I am looking into getting a survival suit. Problem is finding a selection of them to check out. Bass pro has a black mustang but I really would like a camp model. At 400+ I would like to at least try it on before I buy.

I love down but it has it's limitations
Breathable, yes
probably TOO warm for casting
Down has zero insulating qualities if it gets truly wet so you better not fall in or wear it in the rain.

A light weight hollow-fill or fiber-fill jacket would probably do the job better than something like the
Nupste Jacket pictured and will still insulate if somebody gets wet.

Wear many thin layers of clothing instead of a thick bulky jacket. A breadable goretex (or similar) -toplayer is recomended. Over here in Scandinavia the Danish Geoff Andersen -clothing are the most popular ones for fishing. They have great clothing for both rainy and cold weather.

I have a down vest I wear. I wear it close to me in the layers and it really keeps the core warm but with out the sleeves it keeps the bulkiness down significantly.

I really notice the difference if I replace it with a fleece or sweatshirt etc.

My setup for cold, wet, freezing, snowing, blowing, etc Is North Face Mountain bibs and mountain light parka as outer layers. next would be the denali fleece pants and jacket, under that would be the N.F. Nuptse fleece vest. (The same as what youve pictured but a vest). Then of course a thermal and moisture wicking underlayer. The great thing about this setup is that the underarms are all zippered which helps you regulate you warmth. Your gortex MUST be reliable as the down vest is nearly worthless if it gets more than just a little wet. I use the same vest while deer hunting and love it. I dont head out in the late fall or winter without it.

Marmot has some skiing jackets that are 3 in 1 parkas with a goose down liner. I got one this fall and wore it fishing and it was perfect the exterior shell is complete wind proof and water proof the coat breathes alright, but the goose down liner is super warm.
just my $0.02.

I also have recently lost/misplaced an excellent quality Marmot shell. The last time i recall seeing it was in early november as I was stripping down at the ramp on webster for the drive home to chicago. Possible I left it in the boat only to be blown out on the road. The northface bibs I was wearing that do are also M.I.A. Im really p o'd at that one. Marmot is top shelf when it comes to outer layers.
