Hi everyone,

I will be headed to Michigan middle of next week and am wondering how the traffic is around the chicago area late night. I will be staying in Lansing Illinois for the night, but am not expected to get in there until about midnight. I am assuming traffic at that time will be low and travel along I-90, I-290 and I-294 should be minimal...but have never traveled through there at that time... My biggest concern is the morning traffic headed East on 80 to the Indiana Toll road around 8:00- 9:00 in the morning. If any of you can supply a "heads-up" and possibly a time frame for my morning travel it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Steve

In my experience it has been best to drive late at night and VERY early in the morning. Good luck to you....its a jungle out there!

steve i live in lansing...there is a ton of construction goin on right now but comin in late you should be ok!! leavin in the am and heading east should be fine...your biggest problems will be those first couple miles after that your heading away from the city so traffic will be light!!!! shoot me a email if you got any other questions!!!

Late night traffic on 294 isn't bad until you hit the 159th street toll. The constuction traffic on 80/94 is horrible no matter what time you go through. If you can get up really early you can beat everybody going to michigan. Also stay of the dan ryan (94/57), again constuction traffic is bad, even more so after a sox game. Hope this helps

It won't be bad at night. I can't wait soon enough for 2078 to come when they finally complete the project. Crap, I will be dead by then!

I wouldn't stop, that traffic can be horrible in the AM too. My advice, get as far away from that mess as possible that night.

I would suggest taking I 294 around the city pulling a boat. There is construction everywhere and no way to avoid it. When I go to Indiana and Michigan I can chance taking the Sky Way sometimes late at night but won't risk construction and rush hour traffic that can pop up almost anytime, even late at night and early dawn. Also pulling a boat in the construction mess is a hassle.

Good luck with your trip and just have a contingency route worked out to bail off the highway if need be

I live in Munster IN, which is right next to Lansing, IL.
Practically neighbors with muskihunter.
Here is my suggestion.
At Rockford I take Interstate 39 South (51 South) to Interstate 88 East (to Aurora).
East on I-88 to Interstate 294 South (to Indiana).
Not sure where you are going in Lansing, but the Torrence Ave. exit is a mess.
You should stay in the right lane and keep your eyes open for the exit area.
It is not very well marked.
As a matter of fact I went to court this morning fighting a ticket I got at the exit.
I won this time!!!
I will spare you the details.
Going East in the AM between 8-9 should not be a problem.
Like John (muskihunter) said the first few miles might be tight, but after that you should be good to go.
Feel free to give me a call if you need more details.
My cell # is 312-719-4894.
Drive safe & good luck,

Certainly avoid "Chicago" proper. As others have recommended, as you are coming into the Chicagoland area on I-90 and approaching the N/W side and O'Hare airport, take 294 toward "Indiana" south to skirt the city on the west. That will take you to I-80 which you would take east toward Lansing and Indiana. No need to use 290. The south siders could best advise you on the I-80 portion of your drive. I think they have already posted .

39 to 88 will take you around O'Hare Airport.
I stay away form there as as much as I can.
There is usually a bottle neck at the 294 exit off of 290.

Not usually at that time of night. I have hit jams on 80/94 at all hours.

It's easier to go around, WAY around, right now. Tolls and construction, nothing like paying a fortune for a tandem trailer to sit still for hours.

Here is what it says on the flashing traffic billboard outside of Janesville Wis. EXPECT DELAYS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. Thats right at the border of wis and flatlanderville. Not just the weekends either thats all day every day until they are done with construction

Couple of things I need to clarify... No boat is going with me, so no extra axle payment will take place.. It's a racing weekend in Michigan. Travel will be late night...around Midnight as an arrival.

I have greatly appreciated everyones responses. They will be very helpful for our travel next week. Go Kahne!!

I go thru "The Windy" a couple times a year. Expect construction delays on just about every route from 7:00am till 7:00pm. I always have a CB radio going, listening to the truckers on 19 as I approach the city. By listening to them chatter you'll be able to tell the worst route to avoid as you approach. The CB is fun when stuck in traffic, too, the truckers get all nasty and argumentive with each other as they approach any big city.

BTW - I drove I-94 from Detroit MI to Kalamzoo MI last Thursday from 4:45 till 7:00. Like 130 miles? Never in my entire life have I seen so many cops pulling folks over. I bet I saw 12 full grown bears (state troopers), 8 county mounties and 5 city kitties (little town cops the highway happens to pass thru). City kitties are very rare on Michigan highways, so it must have been some coordinated deal.
