Posts: 280 Location: Pewaukee WI | I just thought if this for some reason and I'm sure others have too. How much cash does say a single lake like Vermillion bring to the state of MN. 30% from all the resort owners and guides for income tax correct? Sales tax from everything purchased in the state. Seems like it brings a huge amount of money to the state, more than what is needed to cover the cost of planting fish. Any one know more about it? The reason I ask is there are other lakes like Rainy/Kabetogama/Namekan that would be amazing if they planted leechers in.

Posts: 20219 Location: oswego, il | Musky slayer, I have been saying for awhile those lakes need those fish in them. I can say this. I read an artlicle about 5 or 6 years ago about pomme de terre in missouri and they estimated that lake at that time the muskies boosted the ecomony nealry a million dollars. I want to say I read it in in-fisherman but I am not certain.

Posts: 82 | According to the National Sporting Good Association the following amount was spent last year on sport/recreational equipment Exercise 5.2 Billion Golf 3.5 Billion Hunting and Firearms 3.4 Billion Fishing Tackle 2.1 Billion Camping 1.4 Billion It cracks me up to read the most is spent on exercise and like 3/4 of the population is over weight. Watch out golf and exercise, fishing and hunting is about to take over!

Posts: 280 Location: Pewaukee WI | Bytor, What exactly does that mean thanks? How hard would it be to show a report w/ how much cash it actually brings in and then have the state buy from private places. The state would most likely not increase its funding for more fish but if they knew how much it was bringing in wouldn't it make sense to try to create other fisheries with good chances of natural self-sustaining reproduction? I think its 10$ a piece per fingerling. This is somewhat obvious but i'm just not sure what it would take to happen.

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | That's not how fisheries management funding works. Taxes and licensing, yes. A portion of the state budget goes to the DNR. A portion of that budget goes to stocking fish. A portion of that goes to Muskie management. The overall budget has to be 'divided' by the DNR fisheries management folks based on a whole lot more than what the sport brings in to the total economy. It's a possibility to see the issues connected, though, if one can get more attention payed to the sport and more demand by the public to see more muskie lakes created or more progressive management for muskies funneled through for the Managers, then maybe more money will be there when it's stocking time. Educating the fishing public about how viable muskie/walleye/panfish waters can be and how many anglers those waters will draw in to the Minnesota economy without scaring those sensitive to worry about TOO much pressure is the starting point, IMHO.

Posts: 280 Location: Pewaukee WI | Good points sworrall, thanks, I was just thinking that if the rainy system was stocked w/ leech fish in the the same way vermillion was it would probably be the best fishery in the world, and would bring in massive amounts of bling. Just thinkin out loud here for those who have been on the rainy system. It's just amazing, but a small population. get er done
