Posts: 208 Location: North East PA , 20 mins from Chautauqua | I was just on a walleye charter boat and they used the small bungee material that goes inside tent poles . They loop it around the rod holder base and stretch it tight up to and around the reel handle . It holds em tight in the rough waters of Lake Erie . THE FERD

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | Matt, You shouldn't need any safety straps with a good rod holder. I use Scottys on my boat and have never seen a rod even come close to coming out with salmon or sturgeon. We will often get slams so hard that it's difficult to get the rod out of the holder! If you like to keep the rods low...close to the water I mean, make sure that the rod tip isn't pointed at where the line is entering the water........this is asking for the rod to get yanked from the holder! See the first pic with buddy on the phone........the rod can get yanked out in this position. This buddy of mine likes the rod that way and so he always sits right next to the rod so he can grab it if it goes. If the rods are at the back of the boat near the motor, it's better if the rod tip is up in the air a bit but not sky high! I like the rod tip in the air just a bit with the rod off to one side of where the line enters the water (see pic #2). In this way when the fish takes the rod bends instead of wanting to jump from the holder. If your rod holders are along the gunnels at a right angle to the boat you don't have much to worry about it......just get the rod and reel down in the holders and they won't go anywhere. jed v. Posts: 2378 | I'm in the process of making myself some safetly lanyards to attach to my rods while trolling. Just to be sure I have a connection from the boat to the rod if the holder happens to break. Also, Trojan Tackle makes some safety lanyards (http://www.trojantackle.ca)

Posts: 180 Location: Kinkaid Lake, IL | Bulletproof makes a killer rod holder. I have been impressed with Folbe products from out West. too Super tuff for muskies and does not eat the rod handles. http://www.folbe.com/ I know you can drill into cheaper plastic holders and tie them off that way. I guess your rod still has the chance to fly out of the actuall holder, but you never know.

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | Matt, If you still don't believe that the rods will stay in place, put a rod holder in your boat while it's parked in the driveway (it's ok, your neighbors already know you are crazy) and walk out with the line behind it. Now grab the line and yank with all you have from various directions......I'm telling ya, the rod won't go anywhere. I have watched literally hundreds of chinook, steelhead, and sturgeon be caught and have never seen a rod leave the holder. I have read, however, where sturgeon will snap the rod holder right off the boat but have never seen such a thing happen with a salmon..........musky wouldn't be any different. I have also heard that Folbe makes a good holder. jed v.

Posts: 880 Location: New Berlin,Wisconsin,53151 | I lost a rod and reel out of a plastic holder while trolling Pewaukee a couple of years back. I had just turned around after setting the rods in the holders and saw the rod slowly falling out of the holder and into the lake. I lunged for the back of the rod, missed and saw $200.00 disappear from sight. Letting out this huge scream I grab the kicker and did the fastest 180 my boat will do. The only hope that I had was the floating DB-3, I spent an hour slowly going over the spot that I had lost my brithday present when I spotted the lure about 8 inches under the surface. Needless to say I bought some downeast holders and haven't had an experience like that again, but I used a strap on the rod until the plastic holder were replaced. Netman

| We use Trojan Tackle systems with downeasters. I have seen the down easters pop open before. Not that often though(especially after filing them). The real reason for the lanyards is operator errors. We night troll a lot. It is very easy to lose a rod over the side when landing or releasing a big fish in the dark. Joe Trueglide.com | |||

Seems like most finger grips are wider then the slot that comes on all S-10's. So by filing them wider the reels will sit better. I also use the Trojan tackle system and his layniards are worth there weight in gold. I lost a $600 outfit last fall when I was tossing a lure out, it was a miserable day with 4 foot waves and I lost my balance and dropped the rod instead of diving off the back of the boat. Those layniards would of saved me a lot of $$$$$$. BTW the down easters are almost bullet proof, I had one break on a strike last fall. I may of damaged it on the snag I got just 5 minutes before the 47 incher broke it. I was lucky as I heard the clicker go off and I looked back to see rod and holder at a 45 % angle. When I lifted the rod out the other clamp just slid out and the holder fell into the drink.

Posts: 45 Location: Appleton, Wi | We had a rod holder break on a big fish. We lost everything including the fish. The rod holder company did pay for the lost equipment and replaced all my rod holders. We did not take any more chances. I have a small rope attached to the rod holder and tied to the boat.
