PLEASE NO ONE TAKE THIS AS ME NOT APPLAUDING AN ADDITION TO THE SITE, I ACTUALLY THINK A SCIENCE SECTION IS A GOOD SUB-FORUM....
That being said, I have to say, the more I try to incorporate the "muskie science" that I learn into my fishing, the more I see muskies behaving in ways that disprove so much that is "supposed to be" by scientific study. For example: 2 years ago, got a 43", over 45ft. of water, with 49 degree water temps.....on a JACKPOT, that was twitched FAST!!! Science would say, slow it down, the fishes metabolism is slower, go with a big bait (the fish is storing for the winter), and fish deeper. Truth be told, the fish was relating to a school of baitfish. Which brings me to my all encompassing theory, which is why I personally (though I will of course frequent this portion of the board) don't invest too much brain power towards the science of muskie fishing: muskies are like big fat people (don't even go there Lunchie, I will kick your a@@!!!), they don't want to move around alot to find a meal (why expend the energy?) naaahhh, give them the buffet....therefore, find the buffet, find the fat old lady muskie. Therefore, find out what the fat b*tch eats, find where that buffet is, and there are the muskies. Ok, so thats my $.02....your thoughts!!??

Slamr, very true, one can never really "prove" anything in theory or even with evidence. Proof implies that whatever behavior you see happens all the time no matter the situation or circumstance. I can see the danger in overanalyzing anything, including muskies. Your experience is good evidence that muskies are not a creature of any pattern of habits and that you can find them in any type of water during any season. This science fourum is fun to shoot around ideas and make conjectures, I agree![]

Slamr,
I agree with you. However, I think your idea of "science" is a little narrow minded. Science can be a HUGE asset for figuring out the baitfish connection. That was my point in a different post about how do we discuss LOCATION on this forum.

"Science" is a generic term. We can use physics, biology, ecology, astronomy, and all kinds of "sciences" to better understand all aspects of musky fishing. If you believe that baitfish is the single most useful tool for locating and catching muskies... then science can help you. Understanding the behaviors of the forage fish... and the food for the forage fish (phytoplankton) you can more quickly determine what is going on around you.

We can discuss things like dissolved oxygen, thermoclines, turn-over, run-off, algae blooms, and an infinite number of factors influencing the muskies ENVIRONMENT that will affect where they may be on any given day. Your example of the fish caught on a jackpot in 45 feet of COLD water is a good one. Applying some of the "sciences" discussed here can help you PREDICT when that unusual pattern will be most effective.

Therefore, I think we need to make it clear that the terms RESEARCH or SCIENCE are rather vague, yet are invaluable when trying to unlock the muskellunge mysteries.

I'd like this forum to be a place for guys to post an observation (like your open water Jackpot fish) and then have EVERYONE take a stab at developing a THEORY as to WHY it worked. That, my friend, is research. Organizing observations.... and applying disciplined science (or a gut feeling) to explain those observations. I have found that is the best way to DUPLICATE your past SUCCESSES.

I personally like to incorporate astrology into musky fishing. I call miss cleo before every outing. THe bottom line is, musky location is differant for every body of water. Some waters have fish that tend to suspend more, some relate to structure all of the time. Some waters, like the ones I fish, the fish are shallow a huge portion of the year. In any case, gut feelings can tell you a lot because they come from experience.

I agree that gut feeling is a factor. But, I will take science over gut feeling any day or night on the water. There is no mystical force that manipulates a muskies behaviors. They are cold blooded and they are completly controlled by the environment. There are answers to why a muskie will behave a certian way. If we can unlock some of the "questions wrapped in enigmas" we WILL catch more fish.

THE IRONY IS - THAT IF WE DO UNLOCK THE ANSWERS - MUSKY FISHING WONT BE FUN ANYMORE!

But, I dont think we will have to worry about that for a few thousand years.
