Posts: 384 Location: Eagle River, Alaska | First you have to suffer through my summer fish pics from Montana....just got back last week. The last picture of the bunch is the mystery fish.....first one to post with its exact identity will win. The rod is a Steve Worrall Aurora rod I won a few years ago on MuskieFirst....I deconstructed the rod and it is just sitting here waiting to be rebuilt. It is a 7' medheavy rod, listed for chucking 1-5 ozs of weight. The handle is extended to length using aircraft aluminum tubing. I will reconstruct it to whoever figures the fish out, personal tastes.....included with decorative butt wrap and your name woven on the rod.....in real dollars it would be about $225-250 dollar rod. Why am I doing this? Not sure.....must be the Prozac.....premature senility.....or something like that. May not be able to get it finished until later in the fall (after the fishing season is over up here in Alaska). My annual trip to my parents in Northwest Montana was great and here are the pics.....the first patch are from a single day of fishing on the Upper Missouri River with my brother in law, Chris....each of his fish with the biggest he had ever caught. The picture with my daughter in was for Slamr....man she was willing to wait for you dude....the fish she caught has whirling disease...see how the rainbows spine is twisted from just behind the dorsal fin.....second set of pics is from the Swan River, my undisputable home grounds....been fishing them since I was 10. You can probably name most of the different trout and char but the last one is special....I need the exact kind of fish it is.... I will provide clues if necessary....you have to be resourceful...... Goood luck........Brian Edited by DocEsox 7/25/2006 3:10 AM Attachments ---------------- MissouriBowChris.jpg (130KB - 110 downloads) MissouriBowinWater.jpg (130KB - 108 downloads) MissouriBrown22.jpg (192KB - 113 downloads) MissouriBrown22+.jpg (163KB - 128 downloads) MissouriChrisBoww.jpg (134KB - 119 downloads) MissouriChrisBrown21.jpg (172KB - 117 downloads) MissouriChrisBrown21+.jpg (158KB - 107 downloads) MissouriBrownRelease.jpg (163KB - 117 downloads) Whirling Disease.jpg (111KB - 119 downloads) Browninwater.jpg (193KB - 118 downloads) SwanBow.jpg (188KB - 113 downloads) SwanatPonyCr.jpg (173KB - 131 downloads) SwanCuttSP706.jpg (99KB - 116 downloads) BullTrout706.jpg (196KB - 115 downloads) Rainbowongrass.jpg (183KB - 122 downloads) Mystery Fish.jpg (192KB - 126 downloads)

Posts: 384 Location: Eagle River, Alaska | FirstSixFeet.....you are the winner!! Man you guys are good...I put this on another site in California and no one could get it....just shows how smart musky guys are. Yes, it is a bull trout X brook trout hybrid.....they are the scourge of reestablishing pure bull trout populations in northwest Montana. Fish and game would just as soon you pop everyone of these critters on the head and eat them.....which I did. Actually Montana doesn't advertise the fact much since most people can't tell a brookie from a bull, let alone the hybrids. But the hybrids are outcompeting bulls in some areas and they are deliciious...so for my part I eat everyone I catch.....this was just the biggest I'd ever seen. Congrats FSF.....how long do you like the cork on your handle? And tell us how you identified this fish? Just a lucky guess? Brian Edited by DocEsox 7/25/2006 10:04 AM

Posts: 2361 | WOW!!!!!! I have never won anything on this board before, even as superior as I am sure I am... I don't remember seeing a bull trout picture before, but the red spotting on the side is striking, and in the US the only darker topped trout I remember seeing are #1 Brooks or some derivative thereof, or #2 Lakers, and doubted this trout was a lake trout cross after looking at your pictures. So, with my intuitive knowledge, and extensive fishing background, I made a lucky guess and happened on the post before someone else could pick it off with their own lucky guess. Gee, I feel swell!!!!! Now when I get in a boat with DJohnson and he takes out his custom diamondbacks, etc. I can BLING right back at him!!! I will measure my handles and PM you, I am pretty comfortable with my st croixs and fenwicks and think they all have the same length.

Posts: 384 Location: Eagle River, Alaska | Made it too easy by including that picture of the bull trout. Unless you're into trout taxonomy most people don't know that dolly varden and bull trout are two different species....traditionally they were callled dollies in the pacific northwest. They are a beautiful fish,, though....look a lot like spawning arctic char. Great guess, Brian

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | A fine collection of trout pictures you have there, very nice. It just goes to show what you can have with high water quality. I rarely see bull trout pictures like that here in Oregon since they are listed as a "Threatened Species" under the ESA and taking such a pic can land you in jail! As for the mystery fish, my first guess would be that it's a female brook trout. thanks for posting the pics. Jed V.

Posts: 384 Location: Eagle River, Alaska | Jed....although the catch and release regs in Montana don't specifically state you can't take a picture they do say they should be released immediately which this one was after the quick shore picture. But your admonishment is well taken and I normally never remove any bulls, or other trout, from the water (except above the water for a quick pic) before releasing. I honestly didn't think about it and took the picture with the grass background for a collection of trout pics I recently started.....but they should be released at the water.....good point.
