Subject: What Rod/Reel for What?

I'm somewhat new to chasing muskies, and have a few rod reel combos, and looking to get a few more. I'm curious what you're throwing (rod/reel) for each of the following applications: (thanks for the input in advance!)

-jerkbaits
-bulldawgs
-spinnerbaits
-bucktails
-crankbaits
-topwaters (side to side)
-topwaters (prop style)
-trolling
-twitchbaits (small)
-twitchbaits (big)

I know I'm asking for a lot of info, but even a little would help me on my way.

Since no one else is NICE ENOUGH to answer, I will.

-jerkbaits/large twitchbaits: 7'9" Frank's Custom Diamondback (H) with a 6000 sized Record Reel.
-bulldawgs: 8'5" Frank's Custom Diamondback (XH) with a 6600CL Morrum (I also use this for bigger cranks)
-bucktails/spinnerbaits/medium cranks: 8'6" Lamiglas (XH) w/ 5500 Pro Rocket
-small bucktails/spinnerbaits/small twitchbaits: 7'9" GLoomis (with 3" added on by a custom shop) MH with a Torno 3003
-medium twitchbaits/topwaters: 7'7" GLoomis (with 3" added on) H with a 5500CX-Mag

To be honest, you really don't need a "certain" rod for each application.

Just get a 7'6" Heavy or Extra Heavy DiamondBack from Keith Terlindon at Professional Edge and use it for everything.

I have three rods I use now...all 7'6" Extra Heavy Diamondbacks...and I use them for everything without a problem.

Throw some Abu 6500 C3's on and you are ready to go.

i have 5 rod and reel combos and mostly just use 2. my 7'0" MH gander im8 musky rod is used for
small bucktails, spinnerbaits, small topwaters, small cranks and small jerks. its basically for
most of the smaller stuff. my other rod i use most of the time is a 6'8" XH shimano compre which
i use for all my other stuff. i use 6500 c3s or the 60 size record. my other rods are im6 and im7
gander rods and an eagle claw saltwater with 5500 c3s and gander reels. i will usually have some
type of throw back lure rigged on one of those.

I run Abu Garcia reels on everything.

Smaller bucktails, small twitchbaits (baits up to about 1 1/2 oz.)
6'6" med. hvy. Gander Mountain /6500C3-- 50lb Cortland line

Top waters, spinnerbaits, slightly larger bucktails, larger twitch baits( up to about 2 oz.)
7'2" St. Croix med. hvy./ 6500 C3TM-- 65lb Tuf Line

Jerkbaits, Bulldawgs, larger minnow baits( Grandma's , Slammers, Ernies, ect.)
7' Shamano heavy action/ 6500C4-- 80lb Spiderline

Probably could use more rods to cover more conditions. Need livebait rods , extra jerkbait rods, extra bucktail rods, ect.-----------------you get the message.

Enjoy the madness.....

Here's what I'm doing...

- 8' MH Fig Rig Tooth Tamer/Shimano Cardiff (I would not recommend this reel) for bucktails/spinnerbaits/small crankbaits; 65lb tuffline

- 6'10" H Fig Rig Tooth Tamer/6500C4 - Jerks/gliders; 80lb spectron

- 7'6" MH Fig Rig Tooth Tamer/Diawa Millionaire - topwater; 80lb spectron

- 6'9" H St Croix Premier/7000HS Big Game -- Big baits/suckers; 130lb bronzeback

- 7'6" MH Fig Rig Tooth Tamer/6500 C3 - spare; 80lb spectron

If I was going to start over?

4 - 7'6" MH rods with exactly the same reel

1 - 7'6" MH rod with a high speed reel for jerkbaits and gliders

1 - 8'XH rod with the 7000 for the big heavy stuff

If you are new to chasing Muskies do not worry about matching up a certain rod for a certain type of Lure.....get a couple nice rods, a couple descent reels, and get out there and fish

I use an 8ft heavy Diamondback biult by Keith to throw everything. From 5 1/2 SS Shads to Mag Dawgs they do it all.

Sage advice above fer sure. Though they failed to include a critical element: the leader. Regardless of the rod or line you use, your leader adds an element of variation you must address. Most on the board know better than me, but here's my deals....

First, except one, all of my reels are Garcia 5600ABUs. Yes, the anti-backlash deals. But, I remove all the antibacklash components and replace then with 1) nothing and 2) hardware i buy from Hatterass Outfitters. Consider my reels tricked out with double bearings on the worm gear deal, Smoooothies drag washers, etc. A couple have new gear ratios, faster than original. I learned to do this stuff, at least to start, from listening to Treats, credit is due his way.

I'll leave rods alone, except to say that longer is usually better than shorter, and the best cheap rods around are Cortlands, and the next better rods are St. Croix. Now, I only have limited experience with various brands, so I'm just sharing my experiances. My Main 6 rods are a St. Croix, 3 Cortands and 2 custom rods a friend built for me. Oh, and now I have a XH Flacon rod with a Shimano Spehros spinning reel loaded with 17# Trilene XL as mt dedicated jig/creature rod. So I I bring 7 rods with me.

Besides the jig/creature rod, I use 80# PowerPro on all the reels.

Leaders......I don't understand why folks don't talk about this more. Your leader has a profound effect on the action of your bait. I fish clear water all the time and I make my own leaders. So I see how the baits behave. Dragging a crank straight back to the boat, even then, the leader matters. So what I use is....

80# Climax Flouro at 12" with stringease snaps and berkley bearings. I place a small Bucher split ring between the swivle and the line: I tie to the split ring. This allows me to go into my 8's without the risk of a boatside fish on with the swivle caughjt in the top eye. I use this leader for EVERYTHING except glide baits, live rigs and the 65# sevenstrand i use on the jig/creature rig. Ask me about the live rigs later, thjey're a whole subject of themselves.

I use 10" (swivle and snap included) 174# wire for the glides, and I use Phantoms, Undertakers and Mantas only.

So, that's my deal. Buy the best rods you can afford, and Cortlands are a deal. You can get 3 Cortlands, with an unlimited no questions asked return guarentee, for the price of one high end rod. The high end rod is better, but if you're just starting you can't tell the difference anyway.

You'll see lots of opinions on this. I use 3 rods mainly for casting

7'6" Cabela's fish eagle II....Kind of like a flippin stick, but a little heavier and 1 peice. Great for bucktails, small cranks, 6" dawgs
8' MHF St. Croix Premier....great for crankbaits, 12" dawgs, chatterbaits........this is the rod for stuff thats hard on equpment. Its a strong rod.
7' Grandt's All-American....very light in weight jerkbait rod. I believe its advertised as a bucktail rod, but it has a stiff tip and I can work jerkbaits very good with it

Misc.
8' catfish rods for trolling and suckers. I really like the south bend catfish special which is about $20.
some kind of backup is important too. I have some other casting rods, that I dont' particularly like, but keep for backup.
