Looks like I'll be getting at least two new tires for the Gambler's trailer (a Moonshine brand trailer from Kentucky, no less!). I currently have four ST 205 750 - 14's (load range C) that are Carlysles and one Goodyear ST 215 75- 14 as a spare.

I'd like to get new tires that are a bit less wide. I have little clearance within the wheel wells on the trailer, and due to the weight of the boat, the tires tend to bow in on top and out on the bottom, sometimes rubbing the inside top of the wheel well. I'm hoping a bit less width will give a bit more clearance.

What numbers on the tires determine width? What should I be looking for, any suggestions? thanks, m

Mikie,
The three numbers following the ST (Special Trailer) are the tire width. In your case 205 is the width (205mm).

mikie, if all your tires are tipped in on the top, and you can visually see it, I would get your axles aligned. That is too much camber, and will have bad karma on your tire wear.

Did the Extreme One really say somethng that profound?

As long as we're on tire ? again-- does anyone know the difference in tire construction between a radial trailer tire and a radial car/truck tire? I'm not talking ply rating, just major construction differences. I stopped at a local Goodyear dealer and they had no idea, go figure!

Shep, my mechanic thinks the axles may be bent slightly and recommended getting them straightened as part of the tire change. We discussed that many boat trailers are not made for the weight of the boat they carry and should be beefed up. Not sure that I'd go thru all that, but getting the axles done will be part of the job, now. thanks. He also said that if I go with slimmer tires, the vehicle could get a bit squirrelly, especially on rutted roads.

I have no idea about tire construction, I do know I should be getting trailer tires instead of car tires. m

ps - yes, that was very profound and I copied it the moment I saw it!

Biggest difference between trailer tires and auto tires are the stiffer sidewall construction, and the lower speed rating.

The reason I was asking about construction--was curious as to advantages/disadvantages in using truck radials vs. trailer radials. I would think a 6 ply ( load range C ) radial truck tire (LT) may be more advantageous than a similar rated trailer radial, having greater load capacity and higher speed rating. Just a thought! I would be interested to hear from a tire expert out there. I'm tired, pardon the pun, of tread seperation blowouts at 70 mph.
