I recently caught a 48" & 43" Muskie in Illinois. I was wondering how old these fish may be. Does anyone have any clue? Thanks

Hi Reel,

I don't know the age of those fish but I just wanted to hop on and say nice job. That fish on top is really nice looking. Are those fish caught this season?

Thanks

Dave

Yes sir. The 48" was caught June 23rd and the 43" March 8th.

Thank you.

If about average, and I'm guessing they will be, the 48 would be in the range of 10 to 12, and the 43 8 or so, if both are females.

Thank you for your reply. The 43" was for sure a female, full of eggs. The 48, I would think so for how long it is.

Hey Reel,

If your ever in need of a boat send me an e-mail. I'm always looking for fishing partners in Ill. I live right off the Fox river and I'm about an hour south of the Fox chain. Your more than welcome to come along. Again nice fish.

Thanks

Dave

A lot depends on where the fish was caught. Assuming you caught the fish from the Fox, Steve's estimate would be a pretty good bet.

I caught a 46" and was net man for another 48" (both IL) and I, too, have been curious about their age. I was really hoping my 46" would have a fin clip that might have yielded any info but it didn't, so oh well. If you are still interested in this I would contact Steve Pallo of the IDNR. Steve is the man when it comes to the muskie stocking program for IL and would have a pretty good idea how old that fish might be. Also, check with your local DNR fisheries biologist. If you caught it below Shelbyville's spillway contact Mike Mounce, otherwise you could call the regional HQ and try and contact someone there.

WOW WHAT A GREAT FISH. YOU DID REALLY WELL GETTING HER IN THE BOAT. SHE'S SO BEAUTIFUL. I CAUGHT TWO STATE RECORDS YEARS AGO IN OHIO. WE TOOK THE ONE TO THE ODNR. ACTUALLY THEY CONTACTED US WHEN THEY HEARD OF THE SIZE OF THE FISH AND WHERE SHE WAS CAUGHT. SO WE LOADED THE LADY FROZEN AND ALL AND DROVE TO AKRON OHIO AND HAD THE FISH MEASURED AND RE MEASURED. THEY TOOK A SCALE SAMPLE FROM HER AND PUT IT UNDER A MICROSCOPE. THEY COUNTED THE RINGS ON THE SCALE (AS YOU WOULD ON A TREE STUMP.) PRETTY AMAZING HOW THEY DO THINGS. BUT IT ALL CAME DOWN TO THEM AND THE RINGS ON THE SCALE.
IT WAS THEN DECIDED WHERE THE FISH CAME FROM , WHEN IT WAS STOCKED AND WHEN IT WAS BORN. ALL THIS WAS PRETTY EXCITING. SO WHEN YOU CATCH ANOTHER BIG ONE , REMEMBER TO SAVE A SCALE SAMPLE. YOU ONLY NEED ONE. BUT TWO WOULD MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER TAKE TWO AND TURN THEM INTO YOUR DNR DEPT AND THEY CAN HELP YOU FIND YOUR ANSWER AS TO THE FISHES AGE AND WHERE IT WAS BORN. SCIENCE, AMAZING !! KEEP ON FISHING AND REMEMBER TO LOV'M AND LEAVE'M !
